I read that last year for an English class - what do you think of it?

It's one of my favourite classic novels. There was a TV adaptation on here a couple of years ago, and that was just as good. I really feel for Tess.

One Day by David Nicholls.

I'm a big fan of Nicholls. Have you read his two earlier works, Starter for Ten and The Understudy?

I read Tess of D'urbervilles a few months ago and thought it was remarkable. It's my favorite Hardy so far. He has to be a pretty fierce competitor for most beautiful English language prose. And unlike in Jude the Obscure, which I put down in disgust after 100 pages, he's not totally manipulating his characters to make his moral point. There's a lot of manipulation but it's a little more subtle. Tess is almost an actual character at times and not just a symbol.

yeah. I wasn't expecting to like it at all when I first started it because it seemed so over the top from what I'd heard, but it is one of my favourites for sure

No I haven't, this is the first one of his I read but I really enjoyed it so I'm going to look out for those two. I have heard of Starter for Ten I think.

I also really liked Tess - I couldn't believe how readable it was, much more so than other famous novels from that time.

What didn't you like about it?

Sorry for such a pathetically late reply

I tend to have difficulty getting into stories where a bunch of people are thrown at me right in the beginning. My brain works best with one major character or just a handful of characters.

And I like stories that immediately suck me in. I don't have the patience to read and read and read and read, hoping and waiting for something interesting to happen.

So, those are the two main reasons.

I should, Melissa. Then I'm not left with books I didn't really like and won't read again.

Or, if you can, buy them used, either at a used book shop or through an online used books dealer. Saves $$

All available libraries have banned me due to my habit of forgetting where I put books and returning them 6 months late. I don't buy so many physical books anymore- I don't have the space. Half the books I read I read in store; mostly the newer ones. The older books I download for free on my Kindle and alternate between reading in store and at home. Sometimes, if there's a nice coupon at Borders, and I want a book that's not yet in the public domain but is too long/involved to practically read in store, I'll buy it. Like last night I bought a book of Samuel Beckett's short stories. It's not super-long, only about 250 pages, but I need to spend 5 minutes on each page to get anything out of it.
