I sometimes purposely get drunk, I just see no problem with it. Not hurting anyone. I don't see why other people would have an issue.

I never said I had a problem with it. I said I think it's stupid. I also think NASCAR is stupid, but I don't have a problem with it or fans of it, either.

I saw an issue of respect come up somewhere in this thread. I don't lack respect for people who drink, it's just something I don't like.

Drink all you want. As long as people obey the law (don't drive, etc) then there's nothing wrong with it.

Like I said, there's tons of stuff I do that most people would think is stupid. That's cool, and there's no reason for me to care.

Unfortunately, because alcohol is legal in most nations, some people falsely believe, it is "ok" to consume.

But in my opinion, alcohol is one of the most lethal drugs anyone could consume, let alone abuse.

So...what do I think of binge drinking? It's abhorrent!!

So I dont really care about the harm that drunks do to themselves, its the harm to others that really peturbs me.

Hello:wave:,
For a project for Year 10 Christian Life I have to document some of the opinions/views of Christians and others on the topic of binge drinking.

It would really help me if you wrote your opinions in a reply

:) Thanks
TheImpossibleGirl

I think in my family it's more of a pain. People seems screw their loved ones over it. Maybe because it's an everyday thing. I think in my family it tend to lead into alcoholism . At least with one person, that seem not have a problem with doing it everyday . Even at 9:00 in the morning. Or even when she babysits or drives. I do drink time to time and I prefer not too. It seems to make life not so fun the next day. My views it's better for me not too.

Why should I respect people who choose behaviors that damage their bodies knowing that is a risk?
I hope this came out wrong, Sarah, in this general and absolute way.
1. I don´t think that the fact that I consider someone else´s choice poor should keep me from respecting the person.
2. With every move we make we put our bodies to risk.
Quite obviously, nobody else shares my exact idea as to which benefit-risk ratio is acceptable. Actually, in most cases I don´t even think about this ratio before acting - I do it intuitively; so I don´t seem to have precise criteria myself.
I don't respect smoking in general either, because both are unnecessary, expensive, self-destructive habits with 0 benefits and many long term negative consequences.
A lot of things we do are unnecessary, expensive and carry the risk of self-destruction. As for the "0 benefits" - I am not sure what you would accept as a "benefit".
Would you respect someone who tries to cross streets like Frogger for fun on a regular basis?
Sure I would respect him. In any case, even if it took me some effort to respect him, it wouldn´t be for long. :D

Is there anyone who would actually promote binge drinking? I'm just curious as to why the OP would even ask such a question. It's not like anyone's going to say "It's a wonderful and constructive use of one's spare time" lol.

Just wanted to get some opinions, I had a general idea of what people were going to say and I don't think anyone condones it. Just needed to make the opinion more official than a general idea in my head :)

Also thanx to all of you guys this has really helped me

There's no benefit you get in binge drinking.

While it's not much of a benefit, I would imagine that people who binge drink see the benefit as getting along with their binge drinking peers.

But it is 5 at once, officially binge drinking.

I would spread them out in time more. Three at once is probably just fine.

you guys are lucky. a lot of people 'binge drink' but they dont see it that way because they dont drink all week and then go out on friday night and have half a dozen beers. they dont slam them all down but they do drink them in one night. most of them dont have poblems but the behavior can become excessive and easily become two nights, then three, etc. glad you guys dont have a thing for alcohol cos they dont drink it for no reason. they dont necessarily feel bad the next day. but stuff catches up on you and behavior changes. thats where problems begin. however its not all self-toture... when you move in that social scene it's what you're into.

That is not binge drinking by any rational standard.

that's why i put it in commas. its binge drinking by the 'expert' standards. i dont consider it a binge but apparently it is. and theres some evidence that if its sustained behavior that it can develop problems esp as you get older. i think theres an element of hype and an element of truth to it.

info from wiki,

'There is currently no world wide consensus on how many drinks constitute a "binge", but in the United States, the term is often taken to mean consuming five or more standard drinks (male), or four or more drinks (female), on one occasion.[10][11] One definition states that 5 drinks for men and 4 drinks for women must be consumed on one occasion at least once in a two-week period for it to be classed as binge drinking.'

I actually have a problem with the binge drinking definition of "more than 5 drinks in a night" if the person isn't really drunk. By that definition anyone who has a few beers with dinner and over a game in the course of 6 or so hours is "binge drinking" but the most they get out of it is slightly tired ^_^

I do think binge drinking in terms of drunkenness has good potential to lead to other social problems like addiction, sexual assault, violence, breakdown of the family unit, waking up in jail or a stranger's bed and not knowing how you got there--etc. And as such it should be avoided. I have significantly less problem with someone who has no addiction issues doing it a few times a year in a celebratory manner as opposed to someone doing it on a regular basis, though.

Again the 5 is in 'one session'.

So being male if I throw down 4 shots in 30 seconds it is no problem. If instead I go out to a baseball double header and over the course of 6 hours or more consume 5 beers it is.

Oh yea, if I'm doing those 4 shots head to head with a female she is binge drinking! (For some reason the number if 4 for females).

I agree that is ridiculous.
