Anything by David Weber (except his fantasy series).
Timothy Zahn's 'Conquerors Trilogy'.
Steve White's 'Eagle against the Stars'.
John Ringo's series with the Posleen invading Earth.
It's not exactly sci-fi but Harry Turtledove's World War series was well done.
And I've just started Peter Hamilton's 'Reality Dysfunction' series and it's good so far.

My favorites:
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
Watchers & Lightning - Dean Koontz
The Borrowers - Mary Norton
Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis
My all time favorite The Crystal Cave, etc. by Mary Stewart
And although they are a little freaky... I enjoy the passion with which she writes...Anne Rice and her vampire novels... Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, etc.

I have several authors who I like, as opposed to books, necessarily.

Anne McCaffery -- The DragonRiders of Pern, The HarperHall of Pern
C.S. Lewis -- The Chronicles of Narnia
Isaac Assimov -- the Robot series, the Galactic series, the Foundation series (which he tied all of the series together into one gigantic series just before he died)
Frank Herbert -- Dune and all accompanying books
Roger Zelazny -- Chronicles of Amber (loved them)
Piers Anthony -- The Incarnations of Immortality
JRR Tolkein -- The Hobbit, The LoTR
Stephen R. Donaldson -- The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever

(some of these are fantasy but they are still great!)

Wow, An aspiring fiction author?
If so, this one wishes you a hearty good luck.
:)

Any hints you want to leave about it?

It goes without saying that Tolkien is by far the best fantasy writer. He is my favorite author. Some other authors/books that I like, in no particular order of favorites:

Piers Anthony-----Xanth series, Incarnations of Immortality series
Terry Pratchett-----anything by him, really
Neil Gaiman-----anything
Philip Pullman-----His Dark Materials trilogy
Garth Nix-----Abhorsen trilogy
Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman-----Dragonlance series
Douglas Adams-----Hitchhiker's books
Madeline L'Engle----A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door (the others in this series are okay but not as good as the first two)
J.K. Rowling-----Harry Potter series
Gillian Bradshaw-----Hawk of May trilogy
Alan Dean Foster-----Spellsinger series

well...I could go on and on and on...I LOVE reading, especially fantasy and sci/fi

ANYTHING by Mike Resnick (SF) or David Eddings(Fantasy)

Love LOTR but don't think I'll ever be able to read them again until I can get Elijah Wood's pathetic whining face out of my mind...besides I still don't think the series is as good as the Belgarion/Mallorean series.

OH ya just remembered, these are definite musts for those who like science fiction ships, and aliens!;

Expedition by Douglas wayne Barlowe (The aliens are just insanely cool, talk about a very good artist- my fave is the Daggerwrist)

Barlowe's Guide to Extra Terrestrials

Barlowe's Guide to Fantasy

Spacecraft 2000 to 2100 AD - a very cool book detailing various spacecraft that revolve around a war between us, the Alpha Centurians, and the Proxima Centurians. Full color Illustrations/paintings.
By Stewart Cowley (paintings are done by various artists, mainly Angus McKie though)

Of course the essential is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I loved Raymond E. Feist's books... but it's been years since I've read one and don't know what I'd think now. But he used to be a favorite.

May I be the first to mention harry potter?

Madeline L'Engle can do no wrong in my eyes.

Tad Williams' Otherworld series is pretty fantastic... though the books are impossibly long.
