The theology of Zionism may not be Catholic orthodoxy, but it is a lot more humane than a lot of previous Christian theologies that would have us consider the Jew to be a people forever punished, or that Israel cannot exist as a country because the Church is already Israel, etc. etc.
Zionism is a very American theology, I would think, and finds much of its impetus in the American ideals of freedom of conscience and pluralism.
It would also be painting with too broad of a brush also to state that Evangelicals are categorically anti-environmental. There is a movement across a broad spectrum of Christian thought, evangelical or otherwise, that may be indifferent to the environment, for what does the environment matter if we are in the end times anyways? (Not my view, by the way-just giving the general argument).
Unfortunately, an opposing Christian theology that would have us honor this world as being sacred due to its sacred creation has been poorly developed by any mainstream Christian tradition, American or otherwise.
