I've never really enjoyed books that I've been forced to read! ;)
Weeelll, I was forced to read The Count of Monte Cristo the first time I read it. Has to be my all-time favorite fiction. Dumas can paint such elegant pictures with mere words. Truly a man with a gift.

[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] that is one of the best books ever. the movie doesn't even nearly do it justice. where's the revenge in killing them. if you ever have a chance read the full book- it's amazing

Yeah, they messed with the plot quite a bit. Apart from the book, it's a good story, but if you've read (and enjoyed) the book first, you can't help it but notice the differences.

I think the movies were BETTER insofar as they were more concise and to-the-point. Tolkien wasn't very good at evoking a sense of suspense.
But as far as the sheer DEPTH of the story is concerned, the novel rules supreme, of course.
(And I didn't like the film-adaptation of "The Two Towers" that much: The Extended Edition was better, but still not really as superb as the book. And the theatrical version of ROTK was so obviously cut down to an absolute minimum that you really, REALLY noticed the gaps even if you hadn't read the book before: Why are Eowyn and Faramir a couple, all of a sudden? Why does the Witch King announce that he'll take care of Gandalf, and then never shows up? Why is Gandalf sitting on the ramparts all of a sudden, instead of fighting on as before? And where did that creepy wood in the beginning come from, since the Huorns weren't present in the theatrical release of TTT?)

I just finished reading The Lovely Bones by Jane Sebold. It's written from a girl who is in heaven after being murdered by a close neighbour. Really interesting (not to mention unique) read.

That's kinda scary.

Fyodor Dostoevsky- "The Brothers Karamazov" -- (just reading a few sections again for discussion in a lit class. I might end up reading it all over again, though, since I love it so much)

That was a great book, I read it in HS and should reread it. I also liked his The Idiot, Dostoevsky's bio is interesting and reflected in his writing.

I'm into some manga right now, reading Tsubasa and then the next issue of Kenshin.

Never heard of that, what's it about? :)

It's a bit hard to say briefly... it's about three brothers, one of which is accused for the murdering of his father. Its status as a literary classic comes more from it's philosophical musings on the existence of God and the truth/falsehood of Christianity.

Cool :) I've only read "The Brothers Karamazov," though I'll be starting "Notes from the Underground" in a week or so, probably. He's really an amazing writer.

Whose translation of Brothers did you end up reading, Nadroj?

Brothers is truly an amazing book. It's sort of a book about everything, but the chapters with the discussions on God and Jesus and the Grand Inquisitor are the best, imo. I do like Ivan and the Devil, though.
