How do you like McGrath?

I read a Christian Theology book by him last year and was just curious if reading other books by him would be a good thing to do or if I should pursue other authors on theological things. :)

I enjoy history (especially church history) and autobiographies. Right now, I've got The Autobiography of John Newton (the author of Amazing Grace.)EXCELLENT!

Other books I've enjoyed this past week:

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver: I used to live in West Africa, and while her view of missionaries leaves a lot to be desired, she has done her research on "life in Africa".

Before We Kill and Eat You: by HB Garlock: autobiography of Pentecostal missionaries in Liberia, West Africa where I used to live. Excellent view of pioneers on the mission field there. I remember going every week to one of the churches they planted in Monrovia when I was a child.

All time favorite classics:
The Cry and the Covenant by Morton Thompson: a factual novel of the life of Dr. Ignaz Semmelwiess, the "father" of sepsis

Imitation of Christ

The Prophet by Khalil Gibran

Martin Luther and anything concerning him.

Pope John Paul II autobiography. FANTASTIC!

I have the horrible habit of reading a ton of books at one time. I'm currently reading:

The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Divine Rhetoric by Jaroslav Pelikan

Contemporary Ascetics of Mount Athos by Archimandrite Cherubim

On the Incarnation by St. Athanasius the great (seeing as it is the Nativity season and all :))

Well, I did only list the one book I wasn't reading for class. :p

Otherwise I could also add:

Reconstructing Gender
The Gendered Society-Michael Kimmel
Black Folks Here and There-St. Clair Drake
Historical Anthology of Music By Women
The Invisible Women:A Study of Women and Crime

That's been on my "to read" list for a while.

2) Elder Moses of Optina, trans. by the Holy Nativity Convent
I want to get that. Have you read any of the Optina Elder series put out by St. Herman's monastery?

3) Abess Thaisia-An Autobiography
Somebody gave my wife that book when she was baptized. Can't wait to read that myself.

4) My Life in Christ, by St. John of Kronstadt
Need to read that too!

1) St. Seraphim of Sarov, by Arch. Lazarus Moore
My wife's patron saint! Somebody gave her that book too, but I haven't gotten to it yet either.

2) Life After Death, by Met. Hierotheos Vlachos
I just go a ton of Metropolitan Hierotheos' books on clearance from Holy Ascension Monastery in Georgia. www.monastery.org

3) A Monk of Mount Athos, by Arch. Sophrony
4) Orthodox Spiritual Life, According to St. Silouan the Athonite
Two fantastic books. I love the writings of St. Silouan.

Not yet, but they are on my list.

M wife's patron saint! Somebody gave her that book too, but I haven't gotten to it yet either.
Also my son's patron saint....baptised Sept 28th, 2003.

I really enjoy his books...though it takes me a while to read them, due to having to re-read sentences a few times to let it all sink in.

My Life in Christ was given to me as a gift from a priest-monk as a gift for my baptism....the words of St. John of Kronstadt are very consoling and edifying too.

They're fantastic. I've only read the first two, but they were great.

Vol I: Elder Leonid
Vol II: Elder Anthony

Seeing the Optina Elders brought up will probably make me start Vol III soon. I can't wait to make it through all SEVEN!

I also have Elder Joseph of Optina...I haven't read the whole thing yet though. Sometimes I take on too much or get excited about a new book....and forget about finishing one I already started...one of the monks I talk to tells me to stop spinning in place and get order to my life. Good advice for me. :)
You mentioned the Contemporary Ascetics of Mount Athos books...I also read those...I actually couldn't put them down until I finished them. I've never seen a beard such as the one that Elder Joachim of St. Anne's Skete was blessed with!
Have you read the book "The Hermitess Photini" ? It's very short, but very good.
My godmother is supposed to be ordering that book "Precious Vessels of the Holy Spirit" for me. I can hardly wait for it to come in!

No kidding! Especially since he prayed for a long beard so those in America could tell he was an Orthodox priest! I'd say that is quite a beard!

I have it, but I haven't read it yet.

I manage the bookstore/library at church. We have that book, but I haven't read it yet.
