The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet.
I don't usually read historical novels set in the medieval times that often because I find them too depressing, but I have actually come to like this one. I've heard tons of good things about it and then one of my professors said it should be mandoratory reading for all students of English. So now here I am reading it!
