True Stories Of The X Amish by O.A, Garrett, the husband of Ruth Irene Garett, who wrote Crossing Over:One Woman's Exodus from Amish Life.

Wow discovering a lot about Amish life, how they do not show affection, either verbally or physically, not even to their children! They do not even say"I Love You" or even"Thank You"! They seldom smile or laugh, and there is much abuse by violent fathers!

But it seems what especially causes some to leave, besides abusive fathers, is the hypocrasy of their religion. Not allowed to "own" modern conveniences, such as cars/telephones, yet are allowed to hire drivers to take them places, and they often have phones hidden in a shed, or they are free to use a neighbor's, or a pay phone.

This is noticed by the children, as is the differences of things allowed by each church district, depending entirely on the whims of the governing Bishop! After reading these books,it is clear they are a religion that does not believe in salvation by grace, but works and obedience to their own church district rules or Ordnung, and out of fear of the "Ban".

Most speak a dialect called Pensylvania Duetch and English, and cannot read their Bible written in German,so they must rely on what their Bishop says-it-says! They are discouraged from asking scriptural questions(or too many questions about anything) and bible study. The children live a life of servitude, often put to work doing physical labor before age 5,milking cows, and driving a team of draft horses,to plow, ect at age 8, or even younger! If they believed in witnessing or trying to convert others(which they do not),they would be considered a "cult" for every other reason.
