  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'd say those choices may be the root causes of unwanted/unexpected pregnancies but the root cause of abortion itself probably has more to do with the woman believing that she isn't in a position to carry and deliver a child for whatever reason. It's that belief that forces her to seek an abortion.

I made several selections. I'd say that w/o pregnancy, there would be no abortions (and no births). W/o sex there would be no pregnancy.

That's really not the issue, though. It's not pregnancy in and of itself, but unwanted pregnancy. Now, what causes that? I'd say having sex (with or w/o force) while fertile and not ready to be a parent. So, what causes this?
1. Ignorance of contraceptive measures before pregnancy occurs.
2. Unwillingness to abstain from sex.
3. Ignorance of pregnancy causes.
4. Failure of contraceptive measures taken before sex.

Now, several of these could be caused by intoxicants, low self-esteem, lack of education, etc.

So, what do we do to minimize intoxicated sex, sex to "treat" self-esteem (either by feeling loved or to be "in" with a group), to educate people?

I'd say just about all of these things are root causes in at least some cases:

Men: Man rapes woman, she gets pregnant and doesn't want to have rapist's baby.

Poverty: Woman does not feel economically capable of supporting child.

Lack of chastity: People are not chaste, have sex when they are not prepared to be parents, have abortions.

Low self-esteem: woman has sex out of need for love/validation, is not ready to be parent though, has abortion.

Contraception fails: duh.

Social Conditioning: Whatever you may think of it, abortion is seen as a viable and acceptable way to deal with unwanted pregnancy in our society.

Drug abuse: leads to situations of poor judgment/loss of inhibition or desparation, leading to sex...

Alcohol abuse: Leads to situations of poor judgment/loss of inhibition....

Promiscuity: People want/like sex who aren't prepared to be parents. Leads to unwanted pregnancy when combined with ignorance about birth control or other non-risky sex options, etc.

Immorality: I suppose one could argue that abortion is unethical, though the premises on which one would base such an assertion are certainly arguable.

Sexual exploitation of women: Woman in an unequal position of power with respect to a man feels unable to deny him sex or to make him use birth control, even though she would wish to.

Other: Could be any number of things.

Rape: See Men, above.

Naivety: Woman assumes man will want to have child and family too, or something like that.

Overall, though, I'd say that far and away the #1 cause of abortion is ignorance. Ignorance about birth control options, about how to use birth control most effectively even if it is used, about how to have sex in ways that can't possibly lead to pregnancy, etc.

I voted for 'other". As many here have already stated, the pregnancy has already occured, through rape or promiscuity or whatever. Men are the primary reason for the pregnancy, but this was a "why do women have abortions" question.

So it's probably due to social conditioning, perceived poverty (adoption IS an option), and naivety, but rooted in the other reason listed.

How can abstaining (not having sex at all) lead to pregnancy?
It can't, of course. But what was referenced was abstinence-only education programs. They don't work - they don't lead to abstinence. Numerous studies have shown that kids educated with abstinence only programs have a higher rate of pregnancy than kids educated with a more thorough sex education course, which includes contraception. The reason, of course, is that no matter what you tell them, some kids won't be abstinent - but those educated with an 'abstinency-only' approach don't have the knowledge, when they DO have sex, of how to protect themself.

As already noted, and which should be obvious, abstinence programs and actual abstinence are two very different things.

And such programs only seek to misinform kids about the reality of BC and basicaly amount to nothing other than, "Don't have sex before marriage, and if you do, here's some nasty photos of what will happen to you if you don't do as we say."

They don't inform kids on how to go about having sex and minimize the chance of std, or pregnancy. And by that, such programs ultimately create a higher demand for abortions.
