Over the years since I first opened the pages of the New Testament, I have seen 2 types of people enter the baptistry. The first are those brought up in the church and related to someone in the congregation. The other type (includes me) are those that are few. They are the ones I have no doubt that are already 'born of the Spirit' .
These are the ones that have let the word (or received the word) into their core being and are being motivated by the Holy Spirit. These types of people are viewed with a certain suspicion in the kinds of congregations that I used to attend. The reason being that they believe that the word of God does not bring on an immediate and radical change of a person's nature (or charactor). Nor do they believe that the Holy Spirit operates on a person in such a way today. My conversion was immediate and radical while I read through the 4 Gospels. It was a result of having this occurred that I went to be baptized and to partake of the Lord's Supper and be amongst fellow believers! Born again Christians are always over-eager to do whatever the Lord wants His children to do.
So, I do believe that the minimum requirement to be 'saved' is to receive the word of God into one's core being and the Holy Spirit will take over from there.
