What are the functions of the Paraclete?

The Paraclete-Spirit is a special operative of the Holy Spirit that was released only after Jesus' resurrection (Jn 16:7). Jesus was the first Paraclete; this operative is the second.

What are his operations?

• First and foremost, he bears witness to Christ (John 15:26).
• He enables Christians to be Jesus' witnesses (Ac 1:8).
• He convicts the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment because they do not believe in Jesus (Jn 16:8).
• He unites all believers into one body of Christ (Jn 17:22).
• He teaches us all things from Christ (Jn 14:26).
• He equips believers with spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)
• He dwells in a born-again Christian (Jn 14:17).
• He will declare to us the things that are to come (Jn 16:13).
• He is our advocate (Jn 14:16) and intercedes for us (Ro 8:26).
• He enables us to walk in the Spirit (Ga 5:16).
• He seals us for salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14), providing assurance of eternal life (Ro 8:16).
• He is our peace and rest (Jn 14:27).

This is the special role of the Paraclete-Spirit in the life of a believer. From providing comfort and guidance to empowering for service and assuring of salvation, the Paraclete is integral to the Christian experience. Understanding these functions can deepen one's relationship with God and enhance the ability to live out one's faith. Unlike the gospel disciples, we do not have Jesus walking beside us. However, we do have him walking with us inside us.

John 16:

7 I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

Why didn't God send the Paraclete in the OT?

The first Paraclete was Jesus walking on earth. The second Paraclete bears witness to the first. By definition, God could not send the Spirit-Paraclete before sending Jesus-Paraclete.
