  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

^ There are Coptics who do, and there are Coptics who don't. Hence the existence of a Coptic Orthodox Church as well.

I was under the impression that the Maronites were the only Eastern Catholic Church that has never been out of communion with Rome -- or at least they claim that. If I am wrong, someone please set me straight ;)

Thread drift: ATShavuot, I'm glad to see another West Virginian on here! Are you a native or did you move here from elsewhere? (I'm originally from Detroit.)

So they view the Pope as the Vicar of Christ also? If so, I didn't think that Coptics did.

There are Copts (Egyptians) who are in communion with the Holy Father in Rome. They are Eastern Catholics and accept all of the ecumenical councils of the Church.

Then there are the so-called Coptic Orthodox, who are Monophysites and reject every council from Chalcedon (451) on (which makes them heterodox rather than orthodox). They are not in communion with the Catholic Church.

I love that area. I used to live about four miles from the WV line in Virginia. I have a son who still lives in Stephens City, Virginia.

I pray that I will be allowed to go back there to stay someday soon.

That's God's Country!

MrZoon, regarding the Maronites:

"All competent authorities agree as to the history of the Maronites as far back as the sixteenth century, but beyond that period the unanimity ceases. They themselves assert at once the high antiquity and the perpetual orthodoxy of their nation; but both of these pretensions have constantly been denied by their Christian -- even Catholic -- rivals in Syria, the Melchites, whether Catholic or Orthodox, the Syrian Orthodox, and the Catholic Syrians. Some European scholars accept the Maronite view; the majority reject it. So many points in the primitive history of the nation are still obscure that we can here only set forth the arguments advanced on either side, without drawing any conclusion."

I might add that the all of the various Byzantine Rites listed are but variations of the one general Byzantine Rite and not distinct rites unto themselves. The differences in these variations are often minor and come from translations or minor customs from the various cultures.

Great discussion! I'm finding it quite interesting.

With all due respect to the claims of various churches, let's make a few points:

1. "Copt(ic)" means "Egyptian Christian," pure and simple. An Egyptian Baptist would be a Copt from the perspective of local usage of the term.

2. The largest body of Copts are Oriental Orthodox, non-Chalcedonian Christians, who belong to what is referenced as the "Coptic Orthodox Church" in English. Courtesy allows them the usage of "Orthodox" just as the churches in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarch and commonly called the Eastern Orthodox Churches are entitled to it.

3. There are also small groups of Coptic Orthodox who are Chalcedonian Eastern Orthodox, and Coptic Catholics belonging to an Eastern Rite of Catholicism.

4. From the Catholic perspective, none of the Orthodox are orthodox -- they do not adhere to some of the dogmas and doctrine taught by the Catholic Church, nor do they acknowledge the Pope -- the first making them mildly heretical and the second definitely schismatic. From their own perspective, of course, the situation is reversed.

5. Common courtesy extends to them the right to call themselves whatsoever they choose -- the Oriental Orthodox have as valid a claim to the "Orthodox" usage as do the Eastern Orthodox, from an outside perspective. (Granted that I am personally strongly Chalcedonian, and consider that true monophysitism would say something contrary to the truth about Christ -- though miaphysitism which they actually practice may not be quite so offensive.)
