• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

What are some good ways (prayers, scripture, etc) to overcome ADD?

I've been very ADD/ADHD since I was a kid, and now as an adult, my attention span is almost worse than when I was a kid because I'm not in school right now so my mind has a lot more time and lack of a schedule to bounce around... PLUS I feel the devil REALLY gets at me with distraction because I am so prone to it. In all honesty, 3+ years of my life went by and I did completely nothing... distraction just kept growing and growing... now I want ADD GONE FOREVER!

Anyone have any tips, advice, or experience?

I would also love God to take it away but I think it is a "thorn in the flesh" so to speak. If you give all your mind and strenght as limited as it is I believe God will honour that commitment. I suggest you set reminders on your phone at a time during the day when your favorite shows arent on and go to your room and close the door and even put earplugs in and give as much time to God as you can but make sure that you remain focused on Him alone. Even if it means stoping tangents and destractions and returning your focus to Him. Ive done this just this week and it works even if its 10 minutes. God has spoken to me so much in just those short 10 minutes. Do so also helped me to be focused in the bible study this last week, were i normally fall asleep. God bless will pray for you.

For those with ADHD, they are normally prescribed medications. You have to cooperatively work with your therapist for a successful treatment of your condition. Other than that, make some research about self-help measure that can improve your disorder. For once, I know that Music Therapy has been the topic of many scientific research. For students, music helps improve classroom learning and behavior. It also stimulates the brain and improve concentration. So, why don't you try it too.

I know about a young man who has ADD and I did extensive research and looking into it to see if there is a cure, and unfortunately, every doctor I've consulted keeps telling me there is no cure. The only thing we can do is control the symptoms, but we cannot fully get rid of ADD.

This young man also sleepwalks and talks in his sleep. I was looking for a cure for those two things as well.

Well I'm glad you are trying to help too. Obviously you've looked into this far deeper than I have.

Pastor Reg Morais was healed from his Aspergers when he was in teens. Now, he can healed many people from Australia then later across the countries in which he was invited for missionary work.

What Im trying to say is ADHD can be healed in the name of Jesus. Its never too late to get healed regardless of the ages.

I am getting in trouble at work because I can't concentrate very well and it effects my customer service. I have had ADD since I was little.
I don't neccesarily want to take medication for it because it has side effects.
I don't know what to do.

I never thought of it as a gift except that sometimes people think I'm funny when I make a joke out of it (at least I learned to laugh at myself)

To my knowledge you can't actually get rid of ADD/ADHD, it isn't really a disease so much as it is a different way the brain is wired. It has benefits and detriments.

All of the ADD stimulants that I have tried have had side effects that made them not worth taking, but I have found coffee helps me to focus when I really need to. When I have projects or papers coming due, I'll set up my outline and research notes over the week in my usual, unfocused, ADD, way, and then set a day aside to get all of the writing done. On that day I'll drink a lot of coffee and that helps me to sit down and just write for hours until everything is finished.

Interesting! Some (rather bored?) scientists have done studies and concluded that coffee has a reverse effect on hyperkinetic children - it calms them down. I have tested this on some 8 and 10 year olds, and it's true!

Google "Interactive Metronome"
Try to do N-back exercises (google this as well
If you don't want to take meds, at least look into natural supplements and remedies. Diet and Exercise and other behavior modifications are important as well.

Caffeine from the coffee may be acting as a medicine but there is no way as of right now to cure ADD/ADHD. I would imagine as soon as the coffee wore off so would the calmness you see.

You don't overcome it. You learn to let God work through it. I pray that He takes away mi ADD all the time- after all the gospels are filled with stories of Jesus healing people of diseases they were born with. However, God knows more than we do. Maybe we have it because He doesn't want us walking away from Him.
