bI am interested in knowing which books give a fair and balanced view of church history.

What do you think of The Story of The Church by Clouse, Pierard, and Yamauchi?

I have "two Kingdoms" by the same authors.

It spans the whole history of the church an thus very brief, even on significant events.

Good if you want an overview but not if you want details

Yeah, I thought it was a good book to start with, and it had lots of photos.

The book I like best is "The Early Church" by Henry Chadwick. It's the first volume of a several volume history that he wrote about Christian history. It is quite readable. It covers the church up to 1054 when the Great Schism took place and the Western Church and the Eastern Church separated. This is an excellent book to start with. It is the book that my priest recommended starting with. One of these days, I'm hoping to be able to read Jaroslav Pelikan's series on Christian history. I may have to see if I'm able to get a couple of the volumes through interlibrary loan, as I know I wouldn't be able to afford to buy them. I have heard that the series is excellent.
