What are Satan and Hell like?

Hello everyone,

I know I've a running thread at the moment in this same forum, and I've asked someone the same question I'm asking here, but I think the topic is wide enough to create a seperate thread for it.

I would like to ask you what Satan is like. According to the Bible, he's the representation of evil. It's said that he deceives and seduces people so that they will sin. However, where did this come from? Wasn't Satan an angel before? And being an angel of God, shouldn't he have known better than to have God angered with him? And his Satan as bad as people like to think him as? I can remember Satan challenging Jesus, and honestly I don't see anything wrong with that, other than that he was challenging God. But in itself, it wasn't really an unethical act, was it?

Also, does God love Satan? As Satan is his creation.

And what is Hell like? What kind of punishment will you go through if you go to Hell? Will you only burn for eternity or is there more?

Thanks in advance,

- EgbertTheFourth

Satan was Lucifer in the beginning. He was one of God's archangels. He got too conceited and then wanted to overthrow God. So, God kicked him out of heaven.

as far as hell

hell is a fiery place of torment (all unbelievers go there). I have been there before (not physically but in a dream). Very bright and so scary. The flames stand so high. I thank God for sparing me from feeling the flames. I just was there but I wasn't burning or anything. God said to me, "Is this where you want to end up"? I remember it like it was yesterday. Worst dream in my life to date.

Satan is the accuser, the adversary, and an obstacle. Satan's ultimate sin is pride. Satan can't make anyone do anything. God loves all of His creation, as God is love.

And, as this is less wordy than I would put it myself, I'm swiping this from the Orthodox wiki here at Christianforums:

The Orthodox teaching is that Heaven and Hell are the same "place" , standing in front of God. The Judgment is individual perception, determined by one's relationship to God. This perception will determine whether or not one experiences it as paradise (Heaven) or agony (Hell) eternally .

The role of satan in the bible is that of 'accuser', but it's a subtle role - he is never the focus but an actor on the side who is integral to the plot but we never really see in focus. He is probably best thought of as sub-personal.

And what is Hell like? What kind of punishment will you go through if you go to Hell? Will you only burn for eternity or is there more?
That vision of hell owes more to Dante than the bible. Again, the bible is more interested in the Kingdom of God than the alternative, which sits there off-stage somewhere. Some of the problem derives from the difficulty of the various words actually used in the bible, that don't really have an adequate translation into English. Perhaps it is best thought of as simply an end. Perhaps it is best thought of as what we limit ourself to if we don't allow God to work his grace aka CS Lewis describes in The Great Divorce. (A great book, by the way). Either way, we are supposed to dwell much more on the Kingdom than the alternative, whatever form it takes.

Egberttheforth, Greetings and Happy New Year.

If we take Satan's statement (on the day he fell) and look at it, it boils down to I want to do things my way. He was apparently sick of obeying God. We do that.

Why don't we hear God? Do we really try to hear God? Or, do we realize that hearing God would take away a major freedom to do what we want.

Seashale, I didn't know the Orthodox Church believed that. Where can one read about that?

Yes satan was once an angel who thought he could be the equal of God not just satan but 1 third of the angels of heaven are with him in his rebellion against God. God could have destroyed satan at the start but i believe God wants people who follow Him to follow Him because they are in awe of his perfection and know that He is justified to be the one and only God not because of His absolute power and ability to destroy anyone who stands against Him. God has given satan enough freedom to demonstrate just how evil he is. So that the hevenly host can know that satans claim to be good enough to be God is false. God is longsuffering towards those who are in rebellion against Him for the sakes of those who have a love for His truth and those who will turn from their rebellion and repent.

Also, does God love Satan? As Satan is his creation.

God may indeed love satan but for their to be any relationship satan needs to love God. The same goes for our relationship with God.

God loves us But for us to have a relationship with God we need to Love Him.

The Lake of Fire revealed in the book of Revelation is a place of eternal torment for satan and those who are in agreement with satan in rebellion against God.

Here are the things you'll go through in Hell and the things Satan will put you through.

Before I share this, Note that graphical material is in here:

Now I share:

In Hell, you will be tortured and mangled from head to toe without mercy and letting go.

The first step is the endless fall into the Lake of Fire. You'll fall, fall and fall while screaming like a raindrop of fire.

After you land in Lake of Fire, you'll swim, swim and swim, kicking and screaming while your bones are the only mass left of you.

Out from Lake of Fire, you'll fall head first onto the Land of Lava.

Satan will then walk around with his list in one hand and his pitch fork in the other.

He'll see you and heal you instantly and prepare you for your toture.

Satan will stick you on the lava walls with nails in your hands and feet. Satan will then take 10 paces back and use you as target practice.

Knifes, daggers, blades, torches, spike balls, death balls, and all kinds of bladed blades will plunge into your hurting body.

After this, Satan will rip you down, heal you and toss you to Dragon for a fun meal.

Dragon will then eat you and spit our your remains. Laughter and fun Dragon will have as he watches your body piece itself back together.

Now Dragon eats you a second time and spits out your remains a second time.

As Satan enters the room, he'll stab you with his pitch fork and carry you to the oven where you'll burn to a fine burnt crisp.

After your oven roasted body heals up, Satan will then lock you in you own cage where you'll be occompanied by fire and emotions and rage and memories of your life on earth.

The lights will then go out and all you'll see is the cannibals and torture victims being your nightlight for all Eternity.

The hardest thing is is that Eternity has no time.

No breakfast in Hell, No drink to satify your thirst. No medical attention for your hurting body.

And all you will see is all the times you had a chance but never gave Him a chance.

People may not believe this, that what I am saying is true. That's ok because we all have a choice.

That sounds like a horrible dream. I've had dreams where I thought the world came to an end.

So according to the Orthodox version of Christianity, Hell is the eternal sense of guilt?

And the only way to dwell on the Kingdom is to accept Jesus as your Saviour?

Happy New Year to you too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you mean that people who don't believe in God (thus don't try to hear him) are essentially like Satan?

Yeah, free will. I wonder, isn't suffering a flaw? Shouldn't God know better than to suffer because of his children's actions? He knows them to the core. He knows everything. So... why does he suffer? He knows exactly why they do A instead of B, and what's the cause of everything.

That sounds very horrible. I definitely don't want to end up in a place like that. Neither would I wish something like that to my worst enemies. So...

Imagine that you're a parent (I bet a lot of people here don't even have to imagine). Would you damn your children to a place like hell? Doesn't your love, which is just an infinitely small fraction of the infinite love God experiences, prevent you to send your children to such a place, ever, even if it goes against all reason? You'd do anything to prevent your children from ever doing something that might led them to something like that, right, even if it messes with their "free will".

My point is, why would God want to send us to hell? You'll probably say that he doesn't, but he still sends some of his children for eternal damnation to hell, even though they have only committed finite sins against the almighty and all-loving God.

Imagine you being almighty and all-knowing. You'd definitely find a way to get around something like hell. You're the creator. The definer of existence. You can remove evil and still not mess with "free will", because everything is according to your definition.

Some of you'll be thinking: "Yeah, but God wants our love to be genuine." Then explain to me what "genuine" is. If you ask me, I'd prefer to have one of my children to not love me "genuine" than to send them to hell. Otherwise, I'd be pretty selfish.

I wonder what you think!

I agree with Ebia here in that the fiery burning Hell is not Biblical. It's what I've come to call the Hollywood version of Hell, it makes for great films and stories but little else. ;) In regards to Satan, we only know that he is responsible for deceit, accusations and guilt. He was the angel of music I believe, and thought he knew better than God. Other than that, we can only imagine what both are like, I actually don't believe in eternal torment in Hell, it's a big subject and quite interesting to read about, but often death is referred to by Christ and God as sleep, and Hell is the second death, it is eternal, as in permanent, unlike the first death which is just 'sleep'. :)

Cheers!

So if I understand you right, you'll cease to exist? That's what hell is about?

Yes. Have a read of this if you are interested.

Also ask yourself two questions, as the Bible tells us that there is no suffering or anguish in Heaven:

First - knowing any unsaved family members are being eternally tortured, do you think you could turn a blind eye in Heaven and be happy about your situation knowing what is happening to them?

Secondly, how exactly do we reconcile an ever-loving, pure and good God, with the concept of eternal, fiery and torturous Hell? The two seem mutually exclusive to me, I certainly couldn't love a being that did that to people, no matter what they did in life. Even Hitler does not deserve eternal torture in my opinion.

I have read the biggest part of it, and it's certainly interesting.

I couldn't. But I know a Christian who could.

Secondly, how exactly do we reconcile an ever-loving, pure and good God, with the concept of eternal, fiery and torturous Hell? My point exactly.
