The term anabaptist means, "rebaptized" because most of the early ones were converted Catholics who were baptized again as adults because they viewed their infant baptism in the Catholic church to be invalid. I am a true anabaptist because I was baptized as an adult, after coming out of the Catholic church as an adult.

Anabaptist:

A member of a radical movement of the 16th-century Reformation that viewed baptism solely as an external witness to a believer's conscious profession of faith, rejected infant baptism, and believed in the separation of church from state, in the shunning of nonbelievers, and in simplicity of life.

A name sometimes applied to a member of any sect holding that rebaptism is necessary for those baptized in infancy.

Note: In church history, the name Anabaptists usually designates a sect of fanatics who greatly disturbed the peace of Germany, the Netherlands, etc., in the Reformation period.

Radical? Fanatic? Nothing hostile about those words!! ;)

The shunning thing is incorrect, though. Shunning only applies to BELIEVERS, never unbelievers.

Is this your opinion, EJ, or are you quoting another author? If so, whom?

Most Anabaptists were nonviolent, so saying they greatly disturbed the peace is a little ironic. OTOH the nonviolent civil rights workers in the 60's were also often accused of disturbing the peace.

EJ, I took the liberty to post below the last sentence that you omitted from the paragraph above.

"In more modern times the name has been applied to those who do not regard infant baptism as real and valid baptism."

I was wondering myself, I hadheard the term i think once or twice, but did not know.

So. i used to be really up on different denoms and even other religions, used to study this stuff to be educated while evangelizing, but alas, marriage, illness etc have clouded the last 12 years of my life and alot of my info is outdated or forgotten.

Are all anabaptist previously catholic?

Nope. They formed independently, and independently reached a few of the same conclusions. On many other matters they have nothing in common. I grew up Mennonite, and now belong to a Friends church. Believe me, there are big differences that result from the historical disconnect. There are a lot more historical connections between Anabaptists and Baptists than between Anabaptists and Quakers.

Actually, George Fox founded the Quakers based on what he felt was a call from the Holy Spirit. That's why Friends place such a high importance on the Spirit in the lives of the individuals, almost to the point of no longer being Christian in some meetings. I belonged to a Quaker meeting for a while, until they said they didn't believe in the Bible because it was too rigid of a view of God.
