• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Have you seen this list of things you can do? They can be extremely helpful when you are feeling triggered to cut.
I agree with this post. It's a great list.

I think it's important to look at what it's about with a professional who can help us work through it. When I started cutting, it was to cope with emotions... by the time I quit, it had become an addiction and was very difficult to quit.

Going for exercise/ a shopping spree :)D) is a good way to take your mind off it.

If you cant get out, draw or write (keeping a diary is a must!)

DONT be alone whenever you feel like cutting, ive done the worst to myself when i was all alone, and i know theres no-one nearby.

Keep an elastic band around your wrist, and whenever you feel like cutting, pull that out and let it go. It causes moderate pain with no after effect, so it should take the craving away.

God bless :)

I have heard of putting cold ice on your arm, snapping a rubber band, etc. None of this really worked for me, but I wrote allot. That helped me. Also, I heard about taking a red ink marker and writing on your arm. I never tried that but I found that interesting. Things not to do, or at least for me, do not drink, take drugs, or anything that would lower your inhibitions. Drinking was a real catalyst for me. If I drank, cutting would surely follow. Don't be alone. If you're like most people who have si'd, you don't want it to become a public spectacle. So the best way to avoid it is to make sure that someone is there with you. If nothing else works and you are sure you are going to harm yourself, there is nothing shameful about driving to the hospital and seeking immediate help. i've been hospitalized several times because of self-harm. it very well might have saved my life.

God bless you.

For some people, cutting is partially about the blood...this can be problematic because there is no alternative. If such is the case for you, the less you do it, the less inclined you will eventually be to crave such a thing.

Writing has helped to postpone the SI for long periods of time...I most often find the need to cut at night...and if i could hold out until sleep takes over, I'm okay and could get through another night and day. At times, I couldn't keep it from coming and I was determined to do it. But do everything possible before you get to that point.

I absolutely agree ME. That's why it is important to find things that will distract you - keep your mind occupied. Rather than finding an alternative to cutting, perhaps it is more useful to find things to keep you busy. Idle time can be detrimental to someone who engages in SI. Take up hobbies, join clubs, do more things in public.

good point ME!
