Its the Forum's own American-English Standard version for goodness sake!

ETA: It appears some mischievous elf or something has gotten into those verses and tweaked them since @sjastro's reference! (Replacing 'slave' with 'servant').
Talk about unethical!

Yep. And drank copious amounts of Johnny Walker Black Label. That’s the thing about secular morality, you’re free to make your own decisions.

Well I'm finished with this for now.

I think I've made my point; and I don't feel like repeating myself over and over.

Well as Baretta would say: Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time.

I can't get over how the Forum Admins must have changed the version of Bible translations there!?

What did that do to the literalist's basis of argument then, eh?

Whether the word 'servant' or 'slave' is used, the meaning in those phrases makes it clear what it meant. (.. And it certainly isn't the kind of 'servant' we encounter in the western, modern-day service providing sectors, no matter how they try and spin it!)

Well ... you know how academia is.

They'll look under any carpet to find dirt, so they can spread it out on the floor.

Cycling through your list of groups to blame, again?

What's academia got to do with any of this?

Hitchens wasn't an academic; he was a journalist and essayist.

Governments warnings about the dangers of smoking come from government health studies analyzed by government scientists, not academia.

The "slavery" argument against the Bible, is common one in (esp. amateur) counter-apologetics. It's not something academics would generally waste their professional time on.

I just wanted to know how you determined that smoking was a sin. It need to consume the whole of your life and you could have answered in the time you spent (apparently) dodging the question. If it's not in the Bible explicity do you get to decide for yourself its a sin.

[I say this because I've never heard of smoking as a sin. A nasty habit? Yes. Bad for your health? Yes. Rude to others? Absolutely. A expensive addiction? Yes.]

You made no point. All you succeeded in doing was to smear your own version of God.

Being overly literal is not good when it comes to the Bible.

Let's hope in this case, I've prevented a few auctions by refusing to believe it's a Biblical endeavor.

And if it wasn't for literalism, sjastro's post would have made sense, wouldn't it?

Your link doesn’t have Christians prohibiting smoking.

I managed to get my old church right:

Aren't you glad?

Or are you disappointed?

Either they understood the word servant differently then and modern literalists are being fooled by the change in meaning, or they've been deceptive about the meaning for a looong time.

Since Ex 21:7 starts "And if a man sell his daughter..." if it was deception, the translators didn't think much of potential readers in 1611.
