  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A few months ago I picked up James Montgomery Boice's four-volume Romans commentary. I was going to be teaching Romans to our adult Sunday school class, and I wanted to get input from more of a Reformed perspective. I already had one-volume commentaries by John Stott and Francis Schaeffer (OK...the Schaffer commentary only covers chapters 1-8!), and I was looking for something with more depth.

Does Boice ever fill that bill!! The first two volumes covering chapters one through eight were phenominal...but they were small potatoes compared to his exposition begining with chapter nine!! I was up all night (all night!! I'm gonna be draggin' at work today!) reading and absorbing God's truths. Boice's piece on the potter and the clay would be enough to make an Arminian apoplectic! And humbling for any Christian!!!!

Wow.....

Each chapter in these books is basically one sermon Boice preached to his congregation as he taught on Romans. I think it can only testify to the deadness of America's spirit that these messages did not light the same fire in American churches the way Edwards' preaching ignited the Great Awakening.

One more thing I like about Boice's commentary....he's not afraid to use the NIV!! I was 'weaned' on the NIV and it was my daily bible for the first twenty years I was a Christian. Criticisms of the NIV led me to try and switch to NKJV or NAS, but it was still all in my head 'according to the NIV'. A few years ago I went back to using it for my daily reading. Boice is the first teacher I ever had who actually points out all of the places where the NIV actually gets it right and is superior to other translations!! (Of course,, he also points out where the NIV misses it, too.)

I heartily recommend Boice's commentaries. When I finish Romans, I think I'll pick up his multi-volume commentary on John.

I'm so glad to hear you say that. I have several of Boice's books - and the Romans series is first on my "wish list" at Amazon. I just haven't put aside the money to purchase it yet.

I love the book of Romans - it is the Gospel start to finish. I'm really enjoying this year's broadcasts of the White Horse Inn for that reason (their topic this year - the Romans Revolution). I've had the privilege of hearing Dr. Boice speak in person once - he was truly gifted by God. It doesn't surprise me that he went into such depth with Romans - as you said, each chapter is essentially a sermon. I remember reading/hearing that when he preached from Romans at 10th Presbyterian it took him 5 years to get through the book.

Oh, and my pastor who is a strong NASB advocate (it's incredibly accurate you know;)) has always said that the NIV does good job, especially with the OT.

I love Boice's Romans commentary. I am reading his Ephesians commentary currently.

I have some of Boise's books. He was probably the key Reformed theologian that lead me to Reform theology. I first start getting his books in the mid-80's. After reading his books lead me to read other reformed theologians like Sproul and others. Two of my favorites are of his books are:
1. Foiundations of the Christian Faith
2. 3 Volumes of Genesis Commentaries
