  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I didn't know where to put this, but:

Is Westboro really a Christian church? I don't think they are, because:

1.They spread hate, not love. Protesting at a little girl's funeral, or at a brave soldier's funeral,is definitely NOT Christian.
2.They say being gay is the unforgivable sin. Obviously, it is not! Jesus died on the cross so we could repent, and gays should not be told they can not be saved!
3.They don't spread the word of God. Think about it; when have you heard them talk about Christ's salvation instead of "Thank God for IEDs (that's just messed up)" or "God is your enemy (don't even know what to say about that)"?

Westboro is a church that was ejected from its own denomination. It's constructed of a tiny family of people who survive on their non-redemptive, ill-meant attacks on people.

Until they follow even one relational precept of the Sermon on the Mount I consider them nothing more than Pharisaic, separatist Christians. And yet they defend their actions. I'm wondering what they'll say to:

"Why do you call Me Lord, and not do what I say?"

I wouldn't be surprised if they are some sort of subterfuge group, I suspect they are part of some sort of group with their own interests. One of which is making Christianity look bad.

Where do they get the money to travel all over the place? Why do they protest at children's funerals and soldiers funerals and not at gay parades and gay bars if they hate gay people so much? It's very weird, they have no Christian values at all.

Just a theory though.

Thanks for the information.

Good point. There are groups that pay protestors, and people who take them up on it for a few hey-why-not dollars. Although this church claims to have been around since 1955.

Why else would a church head their site and logo with such an offensive title. What human being gathers under the banner of hatred, and pretends it is spirituality?

Who might pay someone to do that? A person or group that wants to put restrictions on all faith groups, or cut nonprofit tax benefits, or set laws on hate speech.... and more.

But back to your question, any local faith group can fall into a trap of pride. They work hard toward being good, following precepts, being spiritual, serving God, pouring out their lives... and before they know it, they have taken on cult-like aspects that are hard to recognize.

The Bible warns us that "Pride comes before a fall." We are asked to continually humble ourselves.

You are smarter than the average bear. I would even say they are spread out on most of the christian web sites and do control to some degree several of them. Ill go on and say, I know this to be true. A couple of mods here and there, and you can control the flow. Besides they have a forum, just look for it, it is out there.

Interesting points guys, apparently the church only has approximately 70 followers mostly family and mostly lawyers? (Isn't there a scripture about woe to lawyers?)
Apparently you can't be invited to join the church either or just show up? (why the secrecy?)

How can such a small group of loonies have so much influence?

I am a bit confused. They are following the Word of God aren't they? Or at least how they perceive it.

There is very little word of God that matches what they do to me. Their recent exploit was to cheer at the funeral of a nine-year old girl because her family was catholic, so they're glad she's dead. I would seriously doubt God would like a person or group of people to do that to the mourners.

At best they have some something very wrong in their understanding of scripture, at worst they have chosen to ignore every single section of biblical ethics. God knows where their hearts are but they show the bad fruit of human nature Galations 5 rather than the fruits of Gods spirit in the same chapter.

When a person has a 2000-page book, and focuses on two sentences while ignoring the rest, there is a problem.

What would be the motive of holding up signs of the hate and rejection of God? Scriptures are full of verses of God's compassion, even in His rebukes. What would a negative sign-holder accomplish -- how many people would respond, "Oh I get it now, they are so right."

I see, so you follow each and every one of God's words. Do you beat your children? Do you eat shrimp? Do you stone non believers? Do you see where I am going with this?

Where was this accusation coming from? You show a Christian icon, but are slamming the Bible?

The Bible is full of balancing statements. If a person takes one without looking at the other, they lose grasp of what God intended. Others who read what I wrote probably took this as I intended -- that the Westboro church is not promoting God's agenda.
