  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It would seem that Reverend Fred Phelps is indeed an ordained Baptist Minister....

He does not follow the Christian scriptures nor does he practice Christianity. He is a wolf in sheep's clothing and a false teacher. I do not accept him as part of the Baptist denomination.

I have a friend In kansas who encounters the WBC every sunday almost or the "hate group" as he affectionately refers to them by! ;)
and I've seen the sickening picket signs on wikipedia, and my friend has told me about them as well..*shudders* this church honestly gives baptists and the christian religion a bad name, they should be ashamed of the filth theyre promoting! WBC even protests at soldiers funerals, which is downright disrespectful. You dont protest at the funeral of someone who died fighting for this great nation..when families are grieving. I agree with an earlier post, WBC is a cult..not a church. (Westboro Baptist Cult) ;) though the Baptist should be ommitted since they dont qualify as any christian denom.

Well so far, I haven't seen one Christian who agrees with and
supports Phelps.

I think it's obvious that people who lump conservative Christians
in with haters are clearly in error and are most
likely doing so out of bias and their own dislike of conservative
Christians.

The problem that both sides have, liberals and conservatives that is, is that neither, as a whole, seem to differentiate between the diehards, the fanatics, the loose-canons and the rank-and-file Joe.

Of course I consider myself an independent, so what do I know? :p

They seem to have a simple evil goal of trying to make a bad name for conservative christians in general, is what it seems like, and they do convince non believers to continue to shun the christian faith because they think that all of us are that way.:sigh:

I tend to think that all liberalism is "extreme" all the way around
in what it's promoting in unbiblical principles -
the result is obvious if you look around predominantly liberalized cultures.

Fred Phelps is NOT a Southern Baptist. In fact, he has attacked the Southern Baptist Convention, and picketed SBC headquarters and annual meetings.

From the official website of the SBC:

Is Fred Phelps (the pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church and leader of those who protest under the slogan "God Hates F--ags") or his church affiliated with the SBC?

"We share concern over the unbiblical views and offensive tactics of Fred Phelps and his followers. His church is not in any way affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, and his extreme position not only stands in contrast to ours, more importantly they stand in contrast to God's Word. God has stated clearly in His Word that homosexual behavior is sinful, but He also clearly states His love for sinners, including homosexuals, and that He offers forgiveness through Jesus Christ for all who repent and place their faith in Him.

The SBC is not in a position to take official action regarding Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church. Indeed, he has picketed the SBC Building in Nashville and annual meetings on numerous occasions because he believes the SBC to be part of the problem."

Well, being connected with BJU explains a lot. I wasn't aware of that connection. Unfortunately BJU is also known as walking very close to the "fringe", though they are more to the side of common sense than WBC.

Fred Phelps left BJU after only three semesters, and later denounced it as "racist".

Not much of a "connection", IMHO.

I'd like to know who Phelps thinks ISN'T "part of the problem"?

A lot of liberals love to brand Phelps as a "Conservative Christian", but they conveniently ignore the documented fact that Phelps is a lifelong liberal democrat who was once a prominent civil rights attorney.

He has been honored with a civil rights award by none other than the NAACP.

Phelps has also run for public office as a democrat in Kansas on several occasions, garnering a significant number of votes in democratic primaries.

The one and only Al Gore once attended a fundraiser at Westboro Baptist Church, where he and Tipper were all smiles when photographed with Phelps.

He and one of his sons were given official invitations to the Clinton-Gore inauguration in 1993.

Phelps has virulently attacked the Southern Baptist Convention, Bob Jones University, Jerry Falwell, Billy Graham, Ronald Reagan, Bill O'Reilly etc.

Fred Phelps is about as "conservative" as Barack Hussein Obama! ^_^

OMGSH!
I never heard this before. I'm speechless (a rarity) lol

I just wonder why this has never been "outed"? Or has he lately
turned anti liberal & pro conservative/fundamentalist and
rejects liberalism now?

If so, it could be one of those imbalance things where you believed
something horrible & once you turn from it, you go way too far
in the opposite direction into more error

Phelps turned "pro conservative/fundamentalist"?!

I don't think so!

Phelps continues to rail against the Southern Baptist Convention, and attacked Jerry Falwell even after he died, and threatened to picket at Falwell's funeral.

His attacks on Bill O'Reilly are also fairly recent.

"pro conservative/fundamentalist" NO---liberal agent provocateur, probably so!

I need to gather some evidence on this so I can use it
on liberals around here who use him as our spokesman.
