  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've Seen Wrist Ones So I Wonder If You Can Wear A Normal Size One.

Yes, you can wear Chotki's on your wrist. I'm wearing a "wrist one" right now actually...33 knots. I've personally always called 33 knots "normal size". Others may say differently...I dunno. But either way, it matters not about the size (you can wear any size on your wrist...33, 50, 100, etc, etc). What matters is the prayers from the heart that comes when using the Chotki. :)

I've seen other lay people wear the longer ones before. However, I personally don't wear a long one because I don't want to call attention to the fact that I use one. I wear a wrist one. My priest wears a wrist one. Most people I've seen wear the small wrist ones. I've been told by my priest to take a little time every morning to say the Jesus Prayer.

I wear mine arround the wrist to remind me to pray the Jesus Prayer during times of incredible stress. Mine is a long one that can wrap arround my wrist 4x. If I have a short sleeve shirt on sometimes I wear it arround the neck (esp if doing woodwork or something else that will get the chotki all filthy and nasty) or put it in my pocket. Any way, the reason I do this is to remind me to pray the Jesus Prayer while I work.

Like the others have already mentioned the wrist one has 33 knots. But the sizes do tend to differ.

It depends what kind of cord is used and what knot size it generates.

The "normal" sized wrist Chotki has a knot size in between 9 and 10mm. But there are also "small" Chotki with a knot size of under 8mm, these Chotki's are mostly for children.

A large knotted Chotki also exists with a knot size in between 10 and 12mm.

All these wrist Chotki's small to large, can fit on any wrist perfectly, cause they tend to stretch when rolled over the hand. It comes down to personal preference, I like the large knotted ones cause I find them easier to use when praying. But that is because my fingers and hands are quite large.. ^_^

Obviously there is no rule about it, but a practice followed by some Orthodox, especially in Slavic traditions (so I have been told) is to not where outward symbols of faith. For example, the cross is worn under the shirt, chotkis kept in pockets. It's not a rule for lay people but I think it is something worth considering, especially for converts who are naturally and wonderfully excited about their newfound faith. Satan can easily use that to turn our zeal into pride, without our even realizing it. It's subtle, but just be aware. If you ever feel yourself feeling proud of your cross or the chotki on your wrist, or hoping it will catch people's eye, just put it away for a while.

Remember, it's not our jewelry or a bumper sticker that will bring others to Christ. It's our actions and MAYBE our words (although our words can often hurt more than help if we are not prayerful about it.

My 2 cents.

The purpose of wearing the chotki is not to proclaim your faith in an in your face manner to others, but rather to remind you to pray. Thus it only makes sense to wear it on your wrist if you have a long sleeve shirt on and no one else can see it. Likewise, if you wear it under your shirt to remind yourself to pray. Otherwise you keep it in your pocket as a quiet reminder to you to pray, and for no one else to see.
