Watchfulness Explained

It seems to me that the concept of watchfulness is essential (and perhaps unique to) Orthodox spirituality. I'm hoping to get a simple and clear explanation about how to become watchful, or at least more so. I've done some reading about it and am still not clear what the practice looks like for the layperson.

best explanation I can give really isn't one. all I can say is go talk to a pious monk or nun.
