Hi all

Just wanted to pose a question and see what variety of answers I got. I work as a nurse and recently we had a guy in the ward who was a IV drug abuser. One of the girls I work with figured this guy had wasted his life and was beyond any care or help...almost like it wasn't worth our while trying. I find that attitude worrying, but it did get me wondering - is life really ever wasted?

Thanks,

Astral

I'm not sure how life can be quantified in terms of wasted. Could another person use his life in the same sense of clothing tossed out verses clothing given to someone else.

I think a better term would be "did not live life to it's fullest". If the IV drug user wants to change, he can choose to live differently. If not, then his life is what it was.

If he reached all of his aspirations then I guess it was not wasted for him. Depends on how the individual feels about their life.

My church runs a mission in North Philly as part of a cooperative effort with some other churches and we see people come in every day who have been thrown away by society and told that their lives are a waste. I don't believe that's true. I don't believe that anyone is beyond the love of God.

I have seen too many people turned around, set free, made sober, too many families repaired by Jesus to ever believe that any life, no matter how far gone is wasted.

Personally, I believe that the fact that your friend has given up hope is just as tragic as what your patient has done to himself.

I adamantly believe that life is never over as long as you have the will to change what's wrong with it.

Addiction is one heck of a monkey on your back, but it can be beaten, even at the very end.

I agree, I find her attitude both worrying and sad and not one that I'd expected to find to be honest. :(
