  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You can do great things at any age. Don't look at things from the perspective of 'I want to turn my life around'. Look at it like you were destined to do great things at a later stage in life, just like Abraham was.

On the 7th of September I'll be 37. Alcoholic and unemployed since 2005 age 25. Can I still turn my life around?

I also have a medical hormonal condition which needs treating.
The requirements for recovery from alcoholism mimic growth in the interior life of prayer to n extraordinary degree. You have the chance to 'kill two birds with one stone.' Only you will need to take a few minutes ata time as well as one day at a time. It is a practical necessityto be prepared to die to yourself a little, have a little of the spirit of mortification, of asceticism, so that you will be able to bear periods, when you are feeling 'down' - in the certain knowledge, however, that they won't last. And when finally shot of it, life will be immeasurably better.

Yes. Don't wait until you are alcohol-free to turn to Jesus. Turn to Jesus and the Holy Spirit will strengthen you in your adventure to sobriety. Jesus will be a great source of comfort to you. It is never too late. My husband quit when he was given six weeks to live due to liver failure. Three years later he is still alive and sober. He is 52. He had been in rehab twice before but he didn't really accept his problem or want to quit alcohol those times. Only facing death he suddenly changed direction. Don't wait until you are facing death. Alcoholic liver disease is horrific for the sufferer and those that love them. Give yourself over to God and get rid of the millstone of alcohol. You are still very young. May God bless you and the Holy Spirit always be with you. Turn to Jesus because He loves the outcasts, the addicted, the sinners and the sick. Let Him bring happiness into your life.

Edit: This just popped up on my tumblr feed and I thought of you:

“Oh, that we might know the Lord! Let us press on to know Him. He will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring” (Hosea 6:3).

God promises that He is near to those who call upon His name. It doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re going through; He is your deliverer. He’ll bring light into your darkest hour; He’ll bring rain into the dry places; He’ll bring restoration and healing to the broken places. When you call on His name, you can be assured that He will respond. As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, God will faithfully respond when you seek Him.

Sometimes, people think they have to clean themselves up or change their behaviour or habits before they can turn to Him, but that’s not what God says. He is ready to receive you just as you are. Even if you feel like a mess, He’ll take your mess and turn it into a message. His arms are open wide today. Open your heart and call upon Him. Press on to know Him and His goodness.

Certainly. My mother just celebrated 30 years of sobriety. And roughly 29 years of stable job, marriage, life...

There are many organizations willing and eager to help; do yourself a favor and see what's available and find the best option for you.

You've been doing things "your way" for the past decade plus, so clearly that's not going to work. Turn your life over to Jesus Christ and do things "His way." I can speak from first hand experience, brother. We can do nothing without Christ, but with Him we can do anything.

Psalm 121

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

The simple answer is yes, you can turn your life around. Others have which is sufficient evidence that you can.

But that is the simple answer. How one does it is MUCH more complicated. I have a friend who's son is pretty much in the same situation you are. If desire and hard work is all it took, my friend would have had his son's life turned around years ago.

I don't know anything...and don't need to know anything...about your hormonal condition which needs treating. But it wouldn't surprise me that hormonal imbalance would make one more or less likely to drink. But whether or not it is a part of the alcoholism, turning away from alcoholism is hard enough on its own without having to deal with a hormonal issue too.

I will hold you in the Light.

You are not even halfway through your life, if you quit. Of course you can turn it around. When you quit anything addictive it will be hard at first. but if you can make it through a week you can make it through a lifetime. Just remember, those urges will get weaker and weaker as time goes by. Start by just seeing how long you can go without a drink, and then try to go a bit longer. Sooner or later you will be stronger than the urge.

What's the hormonal condition? I know some of those can be pretty severe and while I'm sure everyone here means well...they may have no clue what you're going through.

Thank you very much for the responses. I am waiting for a detox and there's a waiting list in the UK, but yes it's very difficult this disease (alcoholism), especially with hormonal condition but I've been trying to stop since 2011 when my dr told me he would treat me if I managed to stay sober.

I've already had 3 detoxes in the past 6 years.

I have a testosterone defiency:Male hypogonadism - Overview

You may wish to discuss the feasibility of niacin therapy for alcoholism with your medical professional. (cf here & here)

Brilliant news! Good for you. I hope the waiting list isn't too long. Hopefully this time you will find the strength to stick with sobriety and get the hormone treatment you need to improve the quality of your life. Praying for a short waiting list, successful and lasting detox, successful HRT and that the Holy Spirit be with you. God bless you braveheart.

I suspect this may sound flip but I don't mean it that way, but that deficiency would drive me to drinking. I read the link as well as the next page.

I would change doctors if one told me he would treat me for alcoholism only if I stopped drinking. If I stopped drinking I wouldn't need to be treated for alcoholism.

I suspect that getting the hormone thing improve will help but I can't help but believe that leaving it untreated has resulted in emotional and psychic issues which are contributing to the drinking problem also.

Perhaps learning to grow spiritually to allow you to both accept who you are and to love who you are is why you are here in the physical realm at this time.

God does love you just as you are. After all, you are made in His image.

Ahhh...ok...I only asked because so many people have so little understanding of just how profound a hormonal issue can be that it gets casually dismissed...particularly if you don't outwardly display any issues.

So let's get down to brass tax...

Your condition, the lack of confidence it causes, possibly the impairment in relationships, has led you into depression.

I know some people think you can treat the depression without treating its causes...I'm not one of those. I think it's normal to feel bad for oneself in your situation....

But you're trying to self medicate with alcohol...and it's not helping. It may have numbed the pain at first...but it probably doesn't anymore.

Certainly, you'll need to start with a detox...but don't wait to fully beat alcoholism before you start working on the depression, hormonal therapy, relationships, a job, etc. I'm not going to say you haven't been dealt a rough hand...you have...but it is what you make of it.
