They tithed produce from gardens, vineyards, orchards and fields. They tithed the animals of their flocks. They tithed money they earned. Joachim Jeremias wrote the chief priests sent agents to the threshing floors during the grain harvest to make sure they were paid. Priests of lesser rank complained the chief priests were taking tithes that should have been directed to them. Jesus received donations, but did not collect tithes. I think Joachim was quoting Josephus, but am not sure as he also quoted rabbinical sources dating back to the first century BC.
