  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

If you were offended, you were offended. But Paul referred to his righteousness as filthy rags, and we know what kind of filthy rags he was referring to.

Paul was referring to a legal righteousness, that which was dependant on law keeping. It was not a statement of human value. Paul wrote to Christians in highly exalted terms throughout his letters. He understood Christ's salvation as restoring humanity back to the imagio deo in accordance with the original design at humanity's creation.

I'm impressed by the sheer number of people who think its appropriate to sneeringly laugh at the image-bearers of God. I wonder how many would describe themselves as pro-life? Ah, what irony.
It. was. just. a. joke.

Possibly, but a joke all the same. But it was not a theological query into the origin of man.

So if someone went up your girlfriend/wife/daughter, laughed at her and then called her an ugly dirt-bag, it would be okay if they then turned to you and said "Just kidding"?

After all, characterizing it as a joke makes it okay, right?

That would be a personal insult, completely different, this man was referring to everyone as "dirtbags" including himself. It was meant to be a joke to lighten the mood in the room, as many pastors do when they start a sermon. You all are taking it way to far.

Oh, so its okay for a pastor to call your wife a dirtbag from a pulpit, but when he comes down and says the same thing in general conversation, its a "personal insult". Fascinating logic.

And I already stated that I would be calling your wife an "ugly dirtbag" as a joke, to lighten the mood, so I'm still not seeing the distinction.

And we are not taking it too far. When pastors start mocking the image of God from the pulpit, we take that as a sign of something seriously unhealthy in that church. :smoke:

In my Church, the parishioners are censed and bowed to and blessed. I don't think our bishop would look kindly on a priest mocking the people, or any icon.

Have you heard of the word "humor" before? What about the word "joke"? If you were not aware, they are commonplace phenomena in human conversation and when this phenomena is practiced in reality it is not meant to be taken seriously...

any icon.

I'm sorry but I do not share your worship of graven images.

So if I called your wife/girlfriend/daughter ugly, and laughed, it'd be ok?

I don't worship graven images either, lucky me. I don't share your belief in Cthulhu (since we are making up things that the other doesn't believe in, apparently). :)

You know that your example is not the same thing. For one, the pastor in question said none of the things you are hypothetically stating. Second of all, it was an attempt at humor (obviously failed) about the origin and creation of man, I sense in the said joke also an attempt to humble man in the supposed grandeur of his being. Basically stating we were made from dirt, which in biblical terms is true. So in reality he jokingly stated a biblical and creative fact of nature.

I don't think this is a debate forum...

I know, I just don't get why all these people are suddenly mocking the imago dei.

I still don't see why he thinks its ok to mock God from the pulpit, yet he would be outraged if I did it to his face. Rather strange.

But yes, since this is an advice forum, I suppose my advice would be to the OP to confront her pastor about it. If her pastor is still going to treat the holy image of God in such a contemptuous and light fashion, she should find another congregation. Frankly, I think his joking attitude is unacceptable.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and was created with the faithful in the womb, it walketh with chosen women, and is known with the just and faithful." --Sirach 1:16

I am still in the room mister third person. And he did not mock God he mocked man, BIG difference there.

All in all, it doesn't really matter, I had fun taking up for the ridiculous though. :zoro:

My point was Paul's choice of language in the original translation. If you chose to get wrapped around the axle about this, good for you. If your existence is so uncomplicated that this is is all you have to get bent out of shape about...you know what, forget it.

I wouldn't have been offended. The OP was. I say the OP is being a little thin-skinned. You say the person who said it has committed the blackest of blasphemies. We're gonna have to agree to disagree.

Good night and God bless.

A few Sundays ago, during the sermon, our pastor was talking about how God made Adam from clay. Then he went on to say, "yeah, Adam was made from clay, dirt, dust, mud. So what you might say, is that we are all God's dirtbags!"

I was stunned and very much offended. I have not been back to hear him preach - there are different folks preaching every week and he was on again this past Sunday. I am still shocked by what he said and really would like to have others' opinions about this. My husband was just as shocked as I.

Thoughts?

I think he probly had a greater point, it was part of his greater message whatever that was. In the end you will always find things you don't agree with and you simply have to take meat and spit out the bones even with those preachers you look up to. Unless this begins to happen A LOT it's ok. What was the overall point of his message?

Please cite a verse/passage that says we should revere the image of man.

BTW, I don't think this is a "debate" at this point: it's Christian-on-Christian correction, which is a form of "edification" and is especially necessary to giving Christian Advice.
