I don't think so, Genesis 2:
17a you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
I'd assume that this was a species of tree in itself. Eve and Adam ate the fruit from this particular species of tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil which no longer exists.

The English word "apple" was a pretty generic term for fruit before it was specifically narrowed to what we now call an apple, which seems to be where that particular idea came from.

But I agree; the fruit in question is not something we know and have access to, now.

Adam and Eve tried to cover themselves with Fig "Leaves". Making clothing from the fiber of a fig tree goes back at least 20,000 years. Figs are usually considered to be good but they can be harmful also. There was also the story about Jesus and the Fig tree.

18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered.

The depiction of the forbidden fruit as an apple is unique to the Latin-speaking Christian West. In the East it isn't depicted as an apple. The reason for this depiction as an apple in the Latin-speaking West is because in Latin the word for "apple" and the word for "evil" are homonyms, both apple and evil are "malum" in Latin. So in Western art depictions of the fruit as an apple is basically just employing a play on words.

“Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬ ‭NASB1995‬‬

I think this passage seems to suggest that the tree of knowledge was different from most fruit trees and in a separate category. Apples are well known to be a good source of food and nutrients. I get the feeling that the tree of knowledge was perhaps not considered to be good for food.
