  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jewish tradition suggests that Melchizedek, King of Salem, is actually Shem, the son of Noah. As the oldest living patriarch in Abraham’s time, Shem (2448–1846 B.C.) outlived his descendants, qualifying him as a high priest who could pass the priesthood to Abraham. Noah also blessed Shem...

24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
26 And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
27 God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. - Genesis 9

I would believe, if Melchizedek, or the actual Shem.... Came to depart this world was in the need of passing the blessing down, in which happened on Abraham...

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: - Genesis 14

1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. - Hebrews 7

Melchizedek is a Christophany, the "King of Kings". He stepped into history at a moment of war to establish a foundation of peace and righteousness. The thread was being woven into history from the very beginning as the very ground Abram inhabited was Jerusalem. The "Genesis of the Gospel" was being solidified in Abrams victory by rejecting the spoils offered by pagans and embracing the blessings of bread and wine by Mechizedek. A very Powerful Witness as to what was to come in the future.

Be blessed.

And seeing Melchizedek has an order... Makes me believe more the blessing came down through Shem.

The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. - Psalm 110:4

Did the blessing pass from Shem to Melchizedek? Why is Melchizedek a big deal? Because he inherited a blessing that Abraham himself was interested in receiving. And Melchizedek also stirred up a great deal of interest in the Book of Hebrews...

Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. - Hebrews 6:20

It is also written that Melchizedek did not have mother or father, nor did he die but that is in the New Testament and not accepted by that Jewish traditional way of believe.

History and scripture tells us Salem was a Canaanite City..

Going by the ages indicated, both Noah and Shem was still alive during some of time of Abraham. But does that make him both **King** of Salem and high priest to the most high God of the Canaanites?

It would seem that the Canaanites would have their own King instead of Shem.

I believe Melchizedek was God / Christ - how many times did he come down in the Old Testament in human form. So it can't be proven as an absolute that it was Shem but holding the office of *King* and high priest points more to Christ because he is our King and he is the High Priest to the most high God our Father.
