Want to dump computer UPS

I've got a UPS (Universal Power Supply) connected to my computer that I no longer use, and don't trust. Don't trust because because it is old and is running strangely. Making a lot of noise recently - internal fan is acting erratic.

Simple question - how do I dispose of it safely? Safely for me, and for others? Should I just unplug it and let the battery run out? It beeps when power is disconnected. I just want to get rid of it.

Any suggestions? Thank you.

If you're in the US, take it to a place like Best Buy, they recycle Electronic Equipment for free.

You can also use Office Depot, but they appear to Charge you to recycle stuff.

Also, auto parts stores will recycle lead acid batteries. That's where I took some old UPS batteries.
