Why would anyone think this is ok?

Oh boy. Here's an unpleasant story out of Kansas, where a couple enjoyed what they called "excellent service" at Carrabba's Italian Grill, but refused to tip their waiter on the grounds that they simply couldn't abide giving money to a gay man. They made that explicit on a note they left on their table, that read "We cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD." The note went on into some disgusting homosexual slurs, which we won't print here (one notable quote: "[Censored] do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours.")

I know this isn't a reflection on all Christians or even most of them. I just wonder what Jesus would have done...

What kind of logic is this? Are they going to stop paying taxes so that LGBT people can't get welfare money from them? Will they stop giving to charities that don't discriminate?

Paying someone for the service that you asked for isn't an affirmation of that person's life decisions, anyway. Failing to tip, however, is stealing.

Probably a lame excuse from a tightwad to get out of paying.

They are not Christians--they are cheap skates--'A man is worthy of his hire."--Are they not going to pay their mortgage because the president of their mortgage company is gay??--If they were so ofended, they should have left without being served. Will they refuse to pay for watching a football game because there is a gay man playing??That was just an excuse to avoid paying the tip--what if the cook is gay--what if the owner of the restaurant is gay?? Will they eat the food, but refuse to pay for it??

Still... We have to devour others according to God's words... In Christianity there are some set by God regulations called Decalogue or Ten Commandments. Even if person commits sin that person still should be treated respectively and should be given as much help to abide sins in future as Christian can give or provide. Remember the story of Jesus and st. Mary from Magdala (aka Magdalene).

That is the answer to your question.

God bless...

Waiters in the US should really be paid a decent wage. I rarely tip in the UK (our waiters and waitresses are paid for their work) and we always get our food. :D
Yeah same here. A night out can be made really good by the staff and if they do they will get paid for it by me. If someone goes out of their way to make you feel good in their job its bad form not to tip because it gives incentive to do it more. If they see you next time after tipping (when they are paid by the hour anyway) you're a favoured customer.

I shoiuld tip a gay guy 2 times to make up for this thread lol.

How did they know he was gay? Did he make a point of telling them? Did they assume? I think it matters because it seems that there is an unwritten rule in the service industry that you don't say or do anything that might offend your customers no matter how silly your customers' sensibilities might be. If this were an atheist customer refusing to tip a Christian waiter who had made a point of discussing his faith, I doubt it would be newsworthy (and my opinion would be the same).

This seems to be the most likely scenario.

This seems to be the most likely scenario.

If that's the case, then shame on them. It's one thing not to tip (as despite popular opinion, tipping is never obligatory). It's quite another to leave a note saying that despite excellent service, based upon our assumption that you are probably morally deficient in some way that has nothing to do with our dining experience, we are not going to tip you.

Someone in the comments section summed it up pretty well (I know, I am shocked too):
It doesn't really take a personal discussion to assume that your waiter might be gay. People are quick in our culture to ascribe all sorts of stereotyped characteristics as indicative of someone's orientation. Everything from a lisp to a pink shirt to how someone stands is subconsciously judged based on preconceived notions of what it means to be masculine in America. Honestly though, even if the waiter was wearing a rainbow pin or something, that would still be terrible grounds for "Christians" to choose to rebuke their waiter by refusing him his tip. I love that the waiter responded by asking to be tipped based on service, not in recompense for this type of treatment.

(Given American assumptions about tipping)
If the customer had any intergrity he would have taken his service elsewhere in the first place, not accepted the service and then declined to pay.
I wonder if he is in any kind of business. If he is, turn up, buy the service, then refuse to pay him for it on the grounds of not wishing to condone a sinner.

I just seen an article about a man who had a partner and at a restaurant where he worked he wasn't tipped by someone he waited on because of his orientation. They even left him a note on his tip stating its why hey didn't tip him. Of course I agree thats no excuse not to tip him. But what I find frustrating is the press gives these orientation stories.

If it had been a that same man not leaving a tip to a christian waiter... it wouldn't make the news and likely many would have agreed with him for not leaving one. Its like christians are just seen as evil and do nothing but wrong, even when doing right. But certain oriented people no matter how evil they can be are always given sympathy. Which is why I had the equality, fair treatment and freedom stuff they rant about and get away with. Yet if as a christian we want the same things we are looked down upon. Its annoying.

Probably what is more annoying is the fact christians are always targeted. How can we be such a terrible group? There is another religion of people that flew jets into buildings, but they mostly don't ever make the news for any bad they do. Granted I think they get less news because they aren't a majority. So it makes us look worse because the more of us there are, the more bad apples exist too. Still it doesn't excuse how people act towards us.

I think you're confusing Christians as a whole with Conservatives/Fundamentalists/Evangelicals. 80% of the US is made up of Christians. Which means the vast majority of people attacking other Christians, are Christians. It's the Conservative Bible thumpers who get ridiculed, not your average moderate/liberal, minds his own business, kind.

And Muslims get tons of media attention. And they make up less than 1% of the US population.

You know who rarely gets labeled as bad? Jews, Buddhists, etc. Why? Because they don't demonize people they don't like or try to force others to live by their rules. Take a hint.

well, I don't want to put words in Lord's mouth

but what I would have done, if either one of those couple were my kids, is to put him or her on my lap and spank them with a paddle or something, because their behaviours clearly shows they have not been spanked enough!
