This verse speaks towards the sin that dwells in our flesh and will always be there. Paul spoke of this in Romans 7:17, that it was no longer he (the spirit person) that sinned, but sin that dwelled in his flesh. God makes merciful allowance for us all, as through the stages of our growth, and when we are weak, He is strong to forgive and cover us when we are ignorant of sin that may be in our lives. As we grow, the Holy Spirit leads us into all truth concerning sin.

Rom, 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

Earlier, too John speaks towards us as sinners in 1 John 1:8-2:1, yet in the verse following 5:17 says that those born of God don't sin......Well, the battle between the flesh and spirit in man goes on till death of the flesh and the receiving of the new body which is fit for eternity. When speaking towards our spirit, we cannot live in sin and be comfortable in our spirit, unless we are not really born of God, but our flesh is always willing to sin by its old nature that we were born with physically.
This part of the good fight we must fight - to battle our own flesh's nature to sin and control it with the new spirit God has given us and with the indwelling Spirit of God.

Galatians 5:17 (KJV) For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Galatians 5:17 (LIV) For we naturally love to do evil things that the Holy Spirit tells us not to do; and the good things we want to do when the Holy Spirit has His way with us are just the opposite of our natural desires. These two forces within us are constantly fighting each other to win control over us, and our wishes are never free from their pressures.

Gill for your verse:

"and there is a sin not unto death"; this is added for the relief of weak believers, who hearing of a sin unto death, not to be prayed for, might fear that theirs were of that kind, whereas none of them are; for though they are guilty of many unrighteousnesses, yet God is merciful to them and forgives, Heb_8:12, and so they are not unto death.

John Gill's Exposition says....
Rom 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death,.... By sin, is meant every sin, original sin, actual sin, every kind of sin, lesser and greater: the "death" which sin deserves, is a corporeal death; which is not owing to the original nature and constitution of men; nor merely to the divine appointment; but to sin, and the decree of God, on account of it; which is inflicted on Christless sinners, as a punishment for sin, though not on believers as such, because Christ has took away the sting and curse of it: a death of diseases and afflictions also follows upon sin, as its proper demerit; which are properly punishments to wicked men, and are occasioned by sin in believers: there is a death of the soul, which comes by sin, which lies in an alienation from God, in a loss of the image of God, and in a servitude to sin; and there is an eternal death, the just wages of sin, which lies in a separation of soul and body from God, and in a sense of divine wrath to all eternity; and which is here meant, as is clear from its antithesis, "eternal life", in the next clause. Now this is "the wages" of sin; sin does in its own nature produce it, and excludes from life; it is the natural issue of it; sin is committed against an infinite God, and righteously deserves such a death; it is its just wages by law.

Maybe that will help some ? :)

In Christ,
Jai

dear astrol acrobat

uhm...
i think the translation your using may serve some problem.

i think the kjv does a better job with the verse from 1st john.

in 1 john, john is speaking of the diffrence between sin, and the one sin cannot be forgiven or repented of. (what that is, is a little more complicated)
the one unforgivable is a big thing in the church to be discussed, though i think most people are wrong about it.
in 1 john, he us just saying that all sins can kill, but not all sins are like this one sin that cannot be forgiven.

but yes all sins kill, and the wages of all sin is death.

if youd like me to explain what i beleive that ONE sin is, id be more than happy to do that. just a little intracite, and if your not interested i dont want to do that for nothing.
though it isnt anything you need to be afraid of doing if you love God.
its no one thing you can say or do.
it a short way of saying, its you refusing to return to God or be forgiven.

well i do think there is only one thing that cant be forgiven, and that is the sin of hating God so much you will not allow him to forgive you.
but yeah, i think your right.

becuase the bible says blaspheming the holyspirit is an unforgivable sin.
but thats what i beleive blaspheming the holyspirit is.

well, just for myself.
i dont think thats what blaspheming God really is.
though that is what blaspheming God caused the pharisees to do.

i think that was the OCCASION of blaspheming God.
not what blaspheming God is.

i think blaspheming God is what made them do that.
it was the inner hatred in them that was so strong, that even when God proved himself to them by miracles, they did they only thing that had left to do, they said "well thats satans power!" .
it wasnt really what they said, it was why they said it.

i know without a doubt that men of God have stood in my church and i thought they were dead wrong, and thought it wasnt God at all, and i attributed what they did to the devil,... but i was wrong, but im still saved.
but if i had the hatred for Jesus that those pharisees did, i would not be saved, becuase i would never allow him to save me. which is also what the pharisees did.

im not trying to change your belief, but this is what i believe.
well all have been mislead and criticised men of God before and thought it was satan. ya know?
