The software is audited by the election commission and reviewed by officials of both parties.
They wouldn't accept the software if there was a suspicion that it's flawed or tampered with.

I seriously doubt that election officials would have the slightest idea if software was defective. They are normally political hacks with little technical expertise in computer software.
