Voice your opinion of Dungeons and Dragons?

Hi everybody,
I just wanted to see what the opinion of people who don't play these games was.
I believe this discussion belongs here, because for many Christians Dungeons and Dragons is controversial.
I personally believe that much misinformation has been spread about the game by very influential people.
I believe they did it for a good cause, but that they are mistaken.
Please share your view...

I really think we have an opinion here. Based on 10 votes (horrible statistical sample) 90% of christians don't think its harmful. Based on the forum responses most christians just don't care about the game.

There's nothing wrong with playing D&D. As a matter of fact, it can be good for you.

come on its a video game. If vidoe games influence you to go phsyco or kill some one then you have issues already! if you play it for fun (which is what its for) then there is no problem, but if you are crazy and let it influence you in significantly large ways then you are messed up. thats what i think

The thing is there's not too much to influence you. Yeah there's combat and magic, but the magic doesn't delve into the occult and combat usually isn't described too horribly(depends on the DM).

I'm a big Neverwinter Nights online fan, and I agree with the consensus view. It's a lot of fun and good mental and social exercise. When you stop eating, bathing, and sleeping, and start carrying a picture of your familiar in your wallet, you've got to have the self-discipline to back off for a while!

But that's true of most things...

A lot of the anti D&D crowd uses OT references to avoiding sorcerers and fortune tellers. That assumes, very incorrectly, that playing D&D equates to casting spells or dabbling in magic. It's as close to playing with magic as playing cops and robbers.

Lets face it, if someone posted "I think video games are corrupting our children, and occult video games promote the worship of Satan" we would both lambast him for ignorance of the entire issue. I really do try to be even handed.

D&D...it can actually be good for a person and at the very least teach them to work together to achieve a goal. D&D is not real. It is fantasy. Anybody who thinks it's real has a problem distinguishing between reality and fantasy. Fairy tales by the way aren't real, but they always have a lesson or moral that is taught.
