Tech questions not directly related to CF
My computer runs on 64 bit and vista and Adobe 10 says they cannot function with a 64 bit on vista. Windows media player has a similar problem, So I am hunting for an equivalent for both of these programs to run on my computer

I need programs for music, Film making and viewing other compatable sites. I am so angry at Windows for inventing Vista 64 bit. The idea and what it is supposed to acomplish is exciting but the actual performance is pathetic. I have xp sp3 now on my portable pc and that works much better. But this pc is not good enough to use for my film editing and music ect.

Any help would be most apreciated

Sounds like you used the upgrade instead of a format/install. There were many issues that come from upgrading the OS rather than a clean boot.

Also, upgrade to Windows 7. I'm one of the few that liked Vista, but I love 7. It's hands down the best OS I've used. Ever. And that is coming from a background in Linux as well. Works wonders in my recording studio.

I should also mention that I use Winamp as my base music player (Media Player Classic as my video player with the K-Lite Codec pack) and I would uninstall/reinstall Adobe. I've not had any problems using it in x64.

1) I uninstalled/reinstalled adobe 3 times a month back. No change. Adobe even admit on there site that they have had issues with this.

2) I did use an upgrade at first but since then I have backdated my pc to its origional state and reinstalled all programs again. That did not help either. Windows media player has problems with 64 bit on vista and Adobe say the same. (no change)

3) Winamp I have on my portable pc. I have been thinking about that actualy. But as a media player I am looking at muavee. I have already asked them for help in this area after finding nothing while troubleshooting.

4) Most of my associates who use Linux say they don,t have a problem when using it with Mac pc,s and related softwear. I tried this earlier using linux with a new acer,Win and Microsoft. it was a nightmare:doh:

Question: Are you using Mac?

Otherwize I apreciate the feedback. Thakyou:)

Are you absolutely sure that the Vista install is 64-bit? Just because the hardware on the computer is 64-bit, doesn't mean your OS is.

From what I can remember, the only way you could get the 64-bit editions of Vista were by purchasing the regular 32-bit edition and then sending away to Microsoft for the 64-bit (or getting the 64-bit OEM version). Thankfully Win7 includes both in the same retail package (unless you get the OEM).

When I bought my hp pavilion tripple core it came as a 64 bit. There was no choice? Funnily enough I also have problems adjusting my vdu. My pc asks for me to revert to 32 bit. But has no way of actualy doing that. but I will check with the shop. Bought the computer last july, Maybe they can help?:)

Sadly I am starting to worry about the chaos which does not concur with my signature- te he :)

You say you originally installed Vista as an upgrade, yet you cannot upgrade from a 32bit OS to a 64bit os, and I don't know of any Hp's that were sold with Windows XP 64Bit.

You can verify exactly what you have easily enough by right clicking on the Computer Icon on your desktop or start menu.

All modern CPU's are 64bit CPUs, this has absolutely no connection to what OS you run, 64Bit CPUs can run both 32 Bit and 64 Bit OS.

Windows Media Player has absolutely no problems in Vista 64bit, make sure you run all windows updates and are running the latest version. Has run fine on my Vista 64 system since I set it up 2 years ago.

Adobe though you may be out of luck. Probably time to move up to at least CS4, or go ahead and get CS5 when it comes out. They both work fine in 64Bit OS

Ok. Now I have had enough. here is what I have done and here is what I am going to do.

1) it is a 64 bit system. (Vista came with the computer)
2) Windows media player and adobe fail on update because its a 64 bit. I know this because it says so on the error message.
3) my pc is configured to run absolutely all windows updates ect. Which is does normaly apart from Win media player. I have the latest version. the only update on offer is for me to buy win 7. but why should I need to do that? If its there mistake then they should be handing it out free?

My NIS and protection is configured to ask me to allow certain programs. Which I have checked.it asks me anyway. HP diagnostics show no problems with the pc. The problems are with Windows and Adobe. I have had enough:cry::mad:

The main mistake I made was buying with Vista. I should have stayed with XP which gives me a lot less hassle on my portable pc.

First off, it's an HP. But hey, we all make mistakes. :p

What I would do is backup your important files and do a complete reformat of the computer. Something is obviously going on and it seems the likely cause is something you won't be able to fix manually. After you format and get your windows updates all done, then try reinstalling Adobe. I never had any issues before running Adobe on my x64 Vista system, so unless there is an issue with something directed at HP's side, it should work with a format.

Also, you should buy 7 because it's a new OS, not a update to fix anything. There are many new features in 7 that are very useful as well as having a much better engine. You buy it for the same reason you buy new versions of other programs: it's a new version, not an update. Just like in another 4 years, there will be a new Windows version as is their 4 year cycle they have. At least it's not like Tax Cut Pro where you need to buy the new one every year. :p

And to answer your above question: I'm about as anti-Apple as they come.

problem is that i have already done all that. Got A freind who took it all out and reinstalled the lot and that was even after I backdated my pc to its origional stand when I shopped it. I bought this pc one year ago with Vista and now they encourage me to get w7 because vista has issues?? They should pay for that. not I No. I have had enough. I am falling back on xp until such a time as I have no choice. like when xp becomes obsolite. I have a love/hate relationship with Microsoft:doh:

Thanks for your advice though. :)

If you bought your computer by a specific date, you can get the upgrade to 7 for free.

Yes. they told me I was one month too late. Another told me that I had to have bought my computer withing 6 months of the win 7 launch. Whatever the case. they will not let me update for free. But we have a 3 year deal with our supplier. We have told them to take it back if they don,t fix that problem for us at there expense. They blame windows aswell, But at the end of the day we are not paying.

Thankyou all for your replies. I have learned much and will soon have my problems solved. We have the option to return the computer and receive another of our own choice aswell as what programs we want. If I could send a message to some I would say: Windows,Microsoft. I need you, But I hate you at the same time and I know many others who stay on the same boat:yawn::sleep: Reminds me of a car I once had. You spend more time trying to get it to work than you do actualy driving it^_^

Bye bye everyone. Time to bow out. Will not be taking any replys. Thanks to all again:thumbsup:
