Boston is great, but I would definitely recommend the White Mountain region of New Hampshire. Interstate 93 runs through the state, and if you go north from Boston for about 2-2.5 hours you'll reach the area. In Lincoln you can take the 112 East (Kancamagus Highway, which cuts through the mountains), or continue north to Franconia Notch (where the Old Man of the Mountain used to be).

From Franconia you can take Route 3 North followed by Route 302 East to pass by the Presidential Range (you can drive up Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast U.S. and also home to the highest wind speeds and worst weather ever observed by man...but it's not *always* like that ;)). You'll eventually reach North Conway and Conway, which offer some lovely scenery and good shopping. From Conway you can take the 112 (Kancamagus) West back to Lincoln, where you can hop back onto I-93 South.

There are a lot of nice sights, interesting geological features, and good restaurants along the way...although many people love to go up there, it's not exactly 'touristy' per se and you'll never have to worry about there being too many people. You can always ask the locals for some tips on the best things to see and do and I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you.

Wow, I should get a job at a tourism agency or something :p
