Cool! I'll have to check my copy of Grout to see whether it's in there. (It's been a long time; can't remember whether we were taught that one or not. I do recall two myths from hymnology class, though - that Martin Luther and Charles Wesley used popular or drinking tunes with their hymns so that the people would have familiar tunes to sing. Turned out to be completely false. Both men were stringent in their morals and wouldn't have wanted any association between the pub and their hymns, and Luther even rewrote one of his hymn-tunes when he heard that it had become popular and was being used as a dance.)

Grout will have it right. My copy is the first edition (you'll never out-geek me, mwahahah!) and it says very plainly that this story is a myth. So, the definitive source has gotten it right for fifty years, yet I would guess that half of the music majors at any university still think the myth is true.

Prodomos, I would like to see the "patently false proof". I had a couple of accredited history college classes and this was taught and mentioned in lecture and in the text books.

From what I have read, most of the books about "Hitler's pope" make little or no reference to the wealth of primary sources in the French and Italian languages, so they ignore most of the correspondance that went on between the Pope and his bishops/cardinals etc. during that period. The evidence of that correspondance is overwhelmingly against the accusations.

Playing the devil's advocate, they seem to be learning more and more that we are not just "them without the pope". Pray for them instead of condemning them for their mistakes, and especially their crimes against us. Yes, it's unavoidable fact that they left the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church behind many years ago, but at the same time, the fact that we ARE the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church makes us extremely vulnerable to pride! Let's take out the plank in our eye before looking for the speck in theirs. If anything the sins of the Orthodox are worse in the sight of God.

That said, however, we should never forget that the RC church is no friend to the Orthodox. They mean to convert us and we need to remain steadfast in the face of that.

If we follow the fathers and the saints on the way we live, we will draw people to ourselves without us ever getting in the way. What we need to be about is acquiring the Holy Spirit by praying, fasting and alms giving. Islam and all other religious bodies can not stop us from doing that.

I would like to rep Matrona and Jeff, but the rep police won't let me! Kudos to both of you. It's a fine line we have to walk between loving our separated brothers and sisters (and not blaming them for the sins of their forebears) and, at the same time, not compromising the truth. My heart goes out, also, to those Muslims who are appalled and saddened by the hatred and violent behavior of Muslim extremists.

Let us be praying constantly for our Church, for all believers in Christ and for the rest of the world, as well. We all have the same Enemy.
