... no, I'm not talking of the Divine Office. I'm talking of the good old vigils. Like staying away in prayer and stuff. Have you ever done it? If so, how many hours did it last, and what exactly did you do during that time?

I've heard some people just pray. Others also do the rosary, do Eucharistic Adoration, or read the Bible. Any experience on this?

Yes, I would have vigils at home from Midnight until Sunrise. The focus was prayer.

It's been a while since I've been to a vigil myself. It's a very rewarding experience though. The last one I went to was the Great and Holy Friday vigil before Pascha. You sign up to read Psalms at the tomb of Christ (the epitaphios on the bier)- and can stay all night if you like. Some do. I can't last that long. My husband stayed for the whole all night vigil a few times though.
