I am new to the site and to this forum and just wanted to write something I've been thinking about lately. I love to workout and do so very often, I try to eat healthy and maintain my body well. I care about my physique but wonder at what point it becomes idolatry or naraiscism?? I don't run around with my shirt off or anything lol

I used to workout when I was younger, I think there were times I had slight narcissistic habits lol. I think it comes down to how many times you look in the mirror and start flexing during the course of the day. Also it comes down too how many hours you spend working out in one week.

Good for you! I absolutely *hate* working out and therefore don't do it at all. The funny thing is that I've got a belly, am totally out of shape, and yet I have narcissistic tendencies, too. I think the question of whether it's idolatry goes to your motive. Honestly, why do you think you behave this way?

The Greatest Commandment
36"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37And He said to him, "'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' 38"This is the great and foremost commandment.…
Anything that takes that place is idolatry.

If you find yourself doing things for the purpose of showing off, you've probably hit that point. I fail to see how bodybuilding competitions for instance, can possibly avoid that.

If our body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit....

Then stands to reason we should take care of it.

Wanting to be fit & healthy is not vanity (unless you can't stop posing in front of the bathroom mirror..)
It is taking care of what God gave us & making sure we are fit & able to care for our family & others & not be a burden when it could have been avoided by a bit of effort on our part.

Keeping your body fit, strong and healthy is OK. Beyond a certain point, it would be self-indulgence, especially if you would be attempting to draw attention to yourself. God made Samson physically strong, but he neglected the things of the Spirit and became weak and foolish.

I wish when I was younger I had paid more attention to fitness and health issues, anyway (even though it's the 'inner man' that Ephesians speaks of that counts the most).

The Christian and our concept of how we are to treat our body is pretty complex.
I used to look down somewhat on our body. But in later years I've realized that God created our body. We are to love God with our body. God plans to resurrect our Body.
As I get older, I find that exercising my body has so many benefits. I also see some of my friends becoming so weak that they have injures doing some of the littlest things.
While I exercise some, its not really enough to stay healthy as I could be.
Spiritually I've been learning about how trauma can be held in ones body and if not dealt with the problems that can cause.

Anyways, I hope you keep thinking about your body and seeing how you can use your body to glorify God.
