After watching a rather impressive trailer of the belated sequel to the cult hit Beyond Good and Evil, I did want to sing a ballad of those poor souls of the video game world that go one without proper sequels or reboots. To herald the days of long awaited Duke Nukem successors and the long awaited conclusion "2" that yearns to be tacked on the names of countless titles.
However, for your general welfare, I will not be singing nor playing a mandolin. Lucky you.
Though there is a point in reviving some of the corpseified remains of many prior hits at this point. To launch this into orbit, I have always waited for Dungeon Keeper 3. Bullfrog's last team did a very good job with Dungeon Keeper 2, and a third one had been in the works before its liquidation. Forums were kept warm with rumors of surface assaults on the forces of Good and mulitple levels of dungeons, followed by new and fascinating traps to place among hallways. Alas, the British developer split into two camps that followed very different paths.
The most obvious split was with the Lionhead development company, responsible for the ambitious Black & White franchise. The more obscure fork was with a little known group called Mucky Foot. The team at Mucky Foot went on for a few years, and did eventually develop a spiritual successor to Dungeon Keeper 2 called Startopia. That is, Dungeon Keeper in space. A gem if one can find it, but a poor marketing campaign coupled with numerous delays forced Mucky Foot into the same fate as Bullfrog years before.
However, Lionhead gets brownie points for having delays but still managing to keep the hype up to near Daikatana levels. I will never be satisfied, however, as long as they keep Dungeon Keeper in the crypts.
Er, wait . . . I mean as long as they fail to prevent Dungeon Keeper from re-entering the crypts and reconstructing the Dungeon Heart.
