  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm usually very generous giving money to the church, about 300 a month, so is it wrong for me to buy things that would please me, like an Xbox 360? I'm not wealthy at all mind you, so 300 a month is pretty generous. We all have our hobbies, I myself enjoy video games.

In light of the passage in Matthew of the woman who gave the two talents do you still believe what you give is "generous?" I am not trying say that you should give everything you have to the church, but are you giving back to God what His portion is? In addition to that, if you have enough disposable income to purchase luxury items as you indicate, I do not think there is anything wrong with it, as long as the use of them is taking you away from any of the work that He may have for you.

I don't think that God would frown on you playing video games in general - after all, you're using skills and talents that He endowed you with (reaction time, spatial intelligence, a healthy amount of competitiveness, etc) in order to enjoy yourself. However, I do feel that He would prefer that you didn't get an Xbox 360. I think that God would likely disapprove of games like Halo - not due to it being a violent game, but due to it being a poorly-made one. If you really want to honor God's glory and majesty, I would suggest the Zelda series.

I dont know if you will read this because your post was so long ago but I love video games and became a Christian about 6 months ago and recently got rid of them all. With the money thing, with what I made I usually give 200 to 400 a month but it's not about what you give you got to think of it as god made every thing on the earth so even the materials that make money is gods and wants 10 percent so god is letting you keep 90 percent of what's already his for you to do what you want with. and the thing about video games is I loved shooter games and people might say well I know the difference of fake and real but what you see is what you think and me thinking about shooting people even if there fake or not is not right. And most games are very violent theses days and god flooded the world and kill everyone but 8 people because of how violent the world was. I really dont think god would want you to do something that takes your mind out of praising him and into a fantasy world. hope that helps

Life's meant to be enjoyed, as long as you give to God of your first fruits there is no reason to feel guilty about spending your hard earned cash on something you enjoy. Just remember gaming can become an addiction so just make sure you maintain a balance. I wasted about 100 hours of my life playing Skyrim, looking back I think could have used some of that time better.
