Billy,
It's true that in the past many people claimed to be true Christians were in fact, not at all. Where do you get your basis for morality? The ten commandments are pretty clear in the moral standards that God gave to the Jews in the Old Testament. Murder, adultery, stealing, etc... was banned even to the point where punishment for committing such crimes was death.
I don't think just because a group labels themselves "Christian" should automatically be given that status. Paul wrote in the New Testament that Christians should make their calling and election sure, meaning that, those who are true Christians will act like it. Those who murdered, adulterated, stole, lied, etc... without seeing anything wrong with it were no Christians at all.
There are many errors that have even crept within the Christian church, as the New Testament said would happen. Don't excuse such garbage like the faith healings you spoke of, or the Salem Witch trials as defining what true Christianity is, because those simply show how truth is corrupted. Check this verse out:
2 Peter 2:1
But there were also
false prophets among the people, just as there will be
false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought thembringing swift destruction on themselves.
Don't base Christianity on an individual or organization that has killed hundreds of thousands in the so-called "name of Christ." Before you make such accusations, Billysplace, why don't you read the New Testament for yourself and see what Christ taught?
Matthew 7:13
"Enter by the
narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the
way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many."
Matthew 7:14
For the gate is
narrow and the
way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are
few.
What is the "narrow way?" It's being justified (made in right-standing) with God who is too holy to even look at sin. Clearly those "Christians" you are speaking of were not true believers at all, or else they wouldn't have continued to do such things. Trust me, they will recieve their payment.
