Is it true your vehicles aren't legally required to be assessed for.road worthiness annually?

How is that acceptable?

For US residents, I'm curious what checks you are required to have annually. Brakes? Tyres(for road legal tread, affecting grip and braking performance)?

Missouri requires bi-annual safety checks.

I think older vehicles need to have emissions testing, or at least that used to be a thing. But that's the only thing I can think of.

I was thinking that different states may have different requirements and laws. Here in Washington I used to have to take my old Chevy ('82) checked for emissions once a year, but have never had to get any assessments for things like brakes and tires in what I'm driving now.

This is the requirement in the state of NC:

A motor vehicle registered in North Carolina must pass an annual safety inspection before its registered owner can renew its vehicle registration. They can be conducted no more than 90 days before the license plate and registration expires. During a safety inspection, a licensed mechanic examines a vehicle's:

  • Headlights
  • Accessory lights
  • Directional signals
  • Foot brake
  • Parking brake
  • Steering
  • Windshield wipers
  • Tinted windows, if applicable
Motor vehicles registered in 48 North Carolina counties must also pass an emissions inspection, conducted at the same time as the safety inspection.

Failure to get a vehicle inspected by the due date will result in a vehicle's registration being blocked until the vehicle is inspected.

Exemptions
Vehicles more than 35 years old are exempt from the annual safety inspection.

The standars vary from state to state but every state I’ve lived in has an annual vehicle inspection requirement before you are allowed to register or re-register a vehicle. Most states also have emissions inspections.

I would consider twice a year nothing more than revenue collecting.
And here I thought Missouri was a conservative state, guess not.

Not semi-annual, bi-annual.

HF, Like stated earlier in the thread, completely depends on the state your vehicle is registered in.. I've moved around & found there is a wide disparity between state inspections.

Incidentally, you're out of the US, how'd u become a 'Bama fan (?)

None here in Florida. I remember talking to a friend who lived in Rhode Island and he was talking about his annual check. I had no clue what he meant, but he was under the assumption everyone had to have this check, and was absolutely stunned I didn't. He assumed it was a country-wide thing.
