  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if you all could help me a bit.

This year I have been asked to be the craft leader at my church's VBS. The theme is Artic Edge but I am not bound by that theme. I've got to come up with 15 crafts for 3 different age groups. PreK-K, Elementary & Teen. I'm thinking the "nicer" or maybe more complicated crafts for the teens. Something that they will want to keep a hold of through out the years.

This is where I was hoping you all could help. Is there any crafts that you did as a child that has stuck out in your mind or you still have till this day. Could you share them with me?

Thank you all for your help,

Newbeliever

I would suggest also looking online for crafts or maybe in Family Circle magazine online. Also, at christain bookstores they have books on VBS that may have some ideas in them. Maybe try a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michaels if you have one.

As far as the them I was thinking of making igloos, maybe cut out of penguins.

VBS stands for "Vacation Bible School." Most churches in the US offer it. It is basically a week-long period where the church provides Bible teaching, crafts, lessons and snacks to children. Usually it's during the summer (hence the word "vacation" (or "holiday" for those of you on the other side of The Pond). In the past it was usually an all-day thing, but since more mothers are working these days it's harder to find teachers, and many churches now offer it at night.

The "Arctic Edge" theme means that this year's cirriculum is based on an Arctic theme. Many Christian publishers sell VBS cirricula, and almost all of them are themed. Last year my church did a Serengeti theme; another church on the other side of town did an "Under the Ocean" theme with SpongeBob SquarePants as a mascot! :D The theming carries through to how the leaders dress, how the kids are grouped, what Bible stories the lessons deal with, how the rooms are decorated, etc. For example, here is a publisher offering various VBS packages; looks like there's a racing-themed package this year.

To the OP: tie-dying shirts is always fun. It can be expensive, so consult with your children's minister about your budget. It's also time-consuming; dye the shirts tonight and they'll be ready tomorrow.

Smaller children (and perhaps Jr. High and teens) might enjoy making mosaics. Get some old ceramic plates, some hammers, some glue, and some grout from a craft store, and go to town.

Or you could make sushi. Make some Rice Crispy treats like you always would. Place some warm Rice Crispy mixture over a Fruit Roll-up. Place some licorice in the middle, roll it all up, and viola! Sushi!

Hello,

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I do appreciate that.

Snowglobes is a possiblity. A lady came up to me yesterday and told me she has a bunch of baby food jars we could have. So the snowglob idea would be perfect for the jars.

I've done some searching online and came up with some ideas....but nothing really is "grabbing" my attention. Maybe I'm just over whelming myself with so many ideas. The picture frame is another idea (maybe out of popsicle sticks, painted. Then decorated with some "artic" style decorations.)

The mosiacs would be a great idea for the teens. I think any teen would love to "destory" and know they are not going to get in trouble for it. :D The sushi idea sounds neat but I'm leaving snacks up to the other ladies. Crafts is a big enough plate for me to handle.

Is there anyone that has done a craft as a child that still remembers doing it or even still has that craft?

I remember doing a matchstick cross.....

I did the tie-dye thing at summer day camp when I was 8ish. Of course, this was the 70's and tie-dying wasn't as weird then as it is now. That's really the only craft I remember.

I would like to do that...but I was wondering how you would provide t-shirts to all different size kids. I wonder if bandanas would go over well with them?

Buy one-size-fits-none, like Kids XL. Or do bandanas.

Here's a picture of what I was thinking.

And here are some other ideas as well....what do you all think?

wwjd_light.jpg

A lot of the teens will be driving soon, so this might be a good thing for them to have with them everyday. A reminder to put Jesus first in all decisions.

This was something I was thinking about for the younger kids. Put bible verse tags in their to hang up in their bedrooms or on the refridgerator at hom.

Ok, thought this was just to cute!

Something all of the kids could do.....and take to school with them. Instead of putting their names, put maybe the word faith, or PUSH (pray until something happens)....etc.

Well, those were some ideas I came up with. Think the kids might like them?
