Their assessment is what I feared they would find.

why would you fear it? the LCWR is a cesspool of radical feminist political ideology and politicizing. The Vatican has been having problems with them for years. They are not obedient to the bishop and the Church, and they do not want to be. They should be stripped of affiliation. They are a wonderful example of St. Paul's warning in 1 Timothy 2:12.

Because dissent and such in the Church is a sad thing. There was a part of me that hoped the situation wasn't as bad as I thought it was.

Yep, I think we all hoped it wouldn't be as bad as we thought. But the bright side is it will be cleaned up pretty quick, since the sisters don't really have a choice when it comes to accepting the reforms.

Because the article is so clearly biased, it's very hard for me to get an accurate picture of what Sister Bridget McDonald actually said. The only impression I got was that the interviewer was acting like a badgering lawyer treating her like a hostile witness...

An 80 year-old woman, imagine! What a creep Carl F. Olson must be!

But she is absolutely right. People's thoughts are their own, and any Church that seriously expects mind control has become a cult.

I think that the spiritual adolescents are the people who don't interact and wrestle and ponder and pray over everything they hear. I have never believed that taking things at face value is a sign of maturity.

I think that women are as interested in ministry as ever--and they have many options for ministry as lay women without having to deal with what Maureen Dowd calls "a church determined to bring women to heel."

And yes, there are some habited orders that are growing--but the numbers of women entering religious life are still much, much, much smaller than they were before 1960.

Women in ministry deserve respect---not micro-management. That's why these orders aren't growing--and the current "reform" is likely to drive even more women away--not because they are afraid of learning incorrect doctrine, but because they don't want to deal with the hierarchy.

I have several beautiful, wonderful and life-long friends who are Sisters - one of whom is my personal Spiritual Director. They do not deserve this.. Yes, some of the administration of the LCWR (in my humble opinion) are loopy - and in great need of catechesis! But the majority of Sisters are out working "in the trenches", they see so much more of humanity than I will see in a lifetime. They are there feeding the hungry, taking care of the sick, giving comfort when it is needed.. they are living the beatitudes. They deserve and they get my respect - period.

Yes, and that's why the report only criticizes the LCWR itself (that is, the organization that plan and oversees these events, and sometimes speaks for all the congregations).

The document says "The Holy See acknowledges with gratitude the great contribution of women Religious to the Church in the United States as seen particularly in the many schools, hospitals, and institutions of support for the poor which have been founded and staffed by Religious over the years" and "this doctrinal Assessment concerns a particular conference of major superiors and therefore does not intend to offer judgment on the faith and life of Women Religious in the member Congregations which belong to that conference,"

I have five motherhouses within eight miles of me; many "in the trenches" are pleased - not many in the leadership.
