I would say it attacks Christian values:

Very strong humanist, anti-religious, politically correct worldview that is pro-terrorist and includes many anti-Christian elements such as a creepy Anglican bishop desires to sleep with an underage female, and it is implied that a fascist dictator is a conservative Christian who persecutes homosexuals, Muslims and bans the Koran and other books, plus some pagan elements and false religious elements in a scene in which the Koran is called “beautiful,” strong homosexual content in a politically correct manner including a lesbian kissing scene, strong anti-American bias including a mocking rendition of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and radical feminist comments from Gloria Steinem are heard; 29 profanities and 19 obscenities, including some strong profanities and "f" words ; very strong graphic violence including several action scenes in which men are cut up with swords and shot, lots of blood and gore (especially at end), implied biological experiments on people, and several torture scenes; depicted sexual immorality includes depicted lesbian kissing and naked homosexuals huddle together in photos resembling a perverted Mapplethorpe exhibit; extensive full frontal male and female nudity in a few scenes portraying naked and deceased concentration camp victims piled up in a pit; one scene of light alcohol use; no smoking; and, moral relativism, deception, bad role models, utilitarianism, brief talk about "tolerance" but the movie clearly has little or no tolerance for religion and hence is hypocritical, movie credits include sounds of radical Black Muslim statements by Malcolm X and unisex statements by radical feminist Gloria Steinem, title character uses SLA/Patty Hearst techniques on a sympathetic woman, and a strong theme of revenge is only partially rebuked.

I'd like to start off by apologizing. Why? Because I'm not aloud to say everything I want to say to you about your post. Though you can condem a film for the protrayal of gays in a good light, a Christian antagonist and heaven forbid, the Koran, I'm not aloud to defend all those things. Cooky world, aint it?

I'd be cliche for me to say "if you don't like it, don't see it", but you're allowed to warn Christians of the film just like I'm allowed to highly suggest EVERYONE sees the film, not just for entertainment but also strong messages of TOLERANCE. I'm sure you'd be right at home if the hero was Christian and the evil government was secular or Jewish, or something along those lines, because there has never been a bad Christian role model in the history of time or space, and there never will be. Any attempts to refute the last statement are obviously attacks on poor ol' baby Jesus.

But, I digress. Go ahead and warn all the Christians you want to not see the film. But those who actually desire an enjoyable 2+ hours, go see the film (sans small children, of course). If you do not think you'll enjoy it if you do not enjoy seeing any of the bits my good Christian friend just named, then go watch the special edition of the Passion.

Darn you people.

After the horror that was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I wasn’t going to do this to myself again, but after all these positive reviews (especially Meriadoc’s hard sell ;)) I’m going to have to go see another Alan Moore film adaptation.

hoek said:
It is impossible for the graphic novel to have been written in response to the Bush administration considering the first installment of the graphic novel was published in 1982.

Yeah, but even the amazing Randi has now conceded that Alan Moore can remote view at least 140 years backwards or forwards in time, see into dimensions known only to higher math and cure scurvy by touch alone, what’s a little impossibility?
And I have it on very good authority, he also knows the score.

Anyways, though I’ll not be seeing it till the weekend, I’ve rather got the impression that the film loses some of the original comics take on the individual as the basic political unit, (the way Natalie Portman is being sold as the main character for one thing). Which would be a terrible pity, as V’s “individuality” was one of the best things in the comics.

Anyone seen it already and know the original?

I watched it Saturday night.
I was VERY pleased, though I have to admit it is *not really* like the previews.
A lot less tamed, more so mental than physical.
Ahh .. I am SO buying it when it comes to DVD.
It will actually be the first DVD I have ever bought.

LOL!

LOL... like I said, the movie has NO TOLERANCE for religion but we are all entitled to our opinions here. Have a good day my friend! :)

Just got back from my 2nd viewing of the film. And it is still excellent! IMO, this is, so far, the best film of this year. Well written dialogue, extremely well acted, and, a commentary on the fact that goverments don't take power. We give the power to them.

Meriadoc states that the film has a pro-terrorist slant. Well, it does. Much in the same way that the resistance fighters in nazi occupied countries were considered terrorists.

He also states that the film has a anti-christian bias. I counter that the film has a bias against those who would use religion as the foundation to remove the freedoms and liberties of those that the goverment feels are a threat to its power. In addition, it is bias against those who would hide behind the facade of religion in order to provide themselves with the means to carry out their own desires. *cough* Baker, *cough* Robertson, *cough* Falwell *cough* Swaggart, *cough* Tomas de Torquemada.

Finally. When did a film about someone fighting against neo-Nazi oppression and genocide become a threat to the right?

I'm a big fan of Natalies, but I won't go see this film. Let's face it. It is politically motivated. I'm a conservative, I'm a Christian and I love our country and our President. I'm not going to contribute to those who want to villianize me.

Because that's obviously "attacking" Christianity. Showing different opinions or values often constitutes an attack.

On a happier note, the movie was awesome. I'll probably see it for the third time this Sunday. It was a bit different than the graphic novel (I liked the ending to that much more), but if you think of the movie and the book as being two different but similar entities, I see no reason for uproar.

And I don't know about anyone else, but I saw a very poignant "life lesson" in Evey's ordeal. When you go through something so traumatic you are forced to look inwards and see what's really there. And if you find something good, something worthwhile, you emerge a new, stronger being. It's a sort of remaking. Like it says in that Fight Club momologue, "It's only after you've lost evrerything that you're free to do anything."

You mentioned lesbian kissing (but there were no tongues though, chaste kiss on the lips), and Gloria Steinem TWICE. And you mention all this only from reading a review?

The main crux of the theme I got from the movie was that when a dictatorship oppresses the citizenry, individuals have to overcome the fear promoted by the dictatorship and seek the truth. In reality, oppressive dictatorships and governing church bodies have used religion as a tool to oppress people (distorting the good and positive that religion should be used for), just as other governments have used political idealogies to do the same.

Rather than base one's decisions on a review (which is someone's else's opinion, not doctrine), why not see it and judge for yourself? Then you can come to your conclusions on how bad or good it really is.

I've spent time reading alot of reviews on this film from a Christian perspective as far as whether or not it stabs at Christian values and so far, I am not fully swayed...
I'm still not sure of my complete opinion on this film...

but all in all, I know is that I really enjoyed the FICTIONAL plot, characters, and theme portrayed...

Whether the film's message is provocative or not, what it all boils down to is what YOU, as a viewer, are going to believe or take personal...

I feel that V for Vendetta will most likely become the best film of the year 2006.

Vendetta is no Slam Dunk. From IMDB:

Although some analysts had forecast that Warner Bros.' V for Vendetta would reinvigorate the box office and become the first big blockbuster of 2006, the movie took in just $25.6 million, even less than what studio estimates had indicated on Sunday. Indeed the overall box office itself produced dismal returns -- some 10 percent below those for the comparable weekend a year ago. Most analysts blamed competition from "March Madness" -- TV's coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament. But Paramount's She's the Man, which was released to attract women with little interest in the basketball tourney, produced absolutely dreary results, winding up in fourth place with $10.7 million. Last week's box-office winner, Failure to Launch, held up pretty well as it earned $15.6 million and slipped into second place.
