  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So here is a topic I wanted to throw out and would love to hear everyone's opinion.

I am a conservative christian and have been anti-pot for most of my life, but wanted to share my story and perhaps spread some light on the issue.

I have struggled with anxiety for about 4 years, and this last year it had gotten much worse. I was having panic attacks, my heart would be beating and I would feel like I was going to have a heart attack. I talked with the Dr. and he gave me an increased dosage of the benzoid I was taking. That didnt seem to help, and neither did changing my diet and exercising. My blood pressure was very high for my age (25) and I didnt know what to do, as it was affecting my life and inhibiting what I could do.

I prayed and did a lot of research, and found that others who had bad anxiety had used canabis with great results. Now I was very skeptical as I had grown up hearing weed is bad for you, etc. With the anxiety so bad I did something I thought I would never do and bought some canabis from a friend who smoked.

The results were amazing. My blood pressure is way down from what it was before and I no longer have panic attacks. I can live my life again without feeling like my heart is going to pop out of my chest. My outlook on weed has also changed dramatically, as I have seen first hand the medical benefits it provides. I look at it like a prescription drug and only use it before I go to bed, so Im not using it during the day or abusing it.

So here is my conservative opinion on it. I think its a plant created by God with amazing benefits if used in the right way. Like anything else (prescription drugs, alcohol, food, etc) it can be abused and become a negative in ones life. I was also amazed to find out that there has been no recorded deaths from marijuana. Having done some research as well, the only real side effects are slow reaction time (it calms your body down) and increases ones appetite. Also one of the main reasons its called a "gateway" drug is that people who sell weed also sell much harder drugs, which I think if one uses common sense can understand why cocaine, meth, etc have no place in society. But these drug dealers often influence these kids or young adults to try these harder drugs when they simply came to buy weed, and kids cave into peer pressure and do it, thus getting hooked.

Now Im certainly not for the legalization of it for recreational use, as I think if abused, can certainly be a negative thing. But I am for the legalization of medical marijuana, simply because it works.

Its certainly an interesting debate, but I have never heard a good argument from a christian perspective on why medical marijuana should remain illegal.

I'm on the same page with you both philosophically and politically.

There's increasing proof that marijuana holds legitimate medical purposes, as you've discovered firsthand. It's not like you're some frat-boy buying it in a dark alley. If it improves your health and quality of life, then I'm all for it.

During my yearly exam a few years ago, my eye doctor told me that I'm a possible candidate for glaucoma. Maybe we could blaze up together. :D

I've thought for years now that Alcohol, gambling and pot should be treated about the same. To make pot so much worse that we put thousands of people in jail with a federal sentence that destroys their life and costs the public millions of dollars hasn't made sense to me. Medical marijuana is fine, but I think most of the people who would abuse it will do it whether its legal or not. So make it legal and then when most of them mature after a few years they can be productive citizens.

You should remember that it's a man made law (not a God made law that makes dope illegal. There is no specific biblical reference against it other than treating the body God gave you with respect.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

You could argue that using drugs for medicinal purposes helps keep your body in better condition and therefore glorifies God.

I have also heard it said that playing rough sports that risk injury is not treating your body as a temple either!

Taking an occasional drink of alcohol is also good for the body. It's something that Jesus himself did. Anyone that tells you otherwise is twisting God's word for their own purpose.

My mom was a cancer patient and medical marijuana was the only thing that helped her stop vomiting and even sometimes eat. I am 100% for the legalization of it. Most medications out there are derived from synthetic forms of things found in nature -- animals and plants. I don't think marijuana's any different.

However, at this point, since it isn't legal, I'm not sure how I feel about people using it illegally, from a religious standpoint. I mean even if people really need it, like my mom. We're told that God put the government in place (Romans 13:1-7) and that we're only to break the law if it directly goes against God's teaching (Acts 5:27-29).

I've never touched it and never will. Being high is no better than being drunk in my eyes. Besides, you're still doing it illegally and that alone is a sin.

What would you say to people who take pain medication after surgery, which is also considered a high? I could also buy marijuana in Washington State legally, would that make it OK, as its only a form of medication?

Do you live in Washington State?

If not, then it most often wouldn't be legally OK.

He is taking it to get high. Pain medicines are suppressants for those who need them, and there is no better option. Weed has many things that are better alternatives to an ILLEGAL substance.

I was like you for so many years thinking how horrible marijuana was. I finally did a lot of research and found that it has incredible medical properties and I am living proof that it works for medicinal purposes. Also you say there is better options and I would love to know what those are as I have tried every prescription drug for anxiety, changing my diet, and exercising and marijuana has been the only thing that has helped. Also I live just 10 minutes from the Washington State border so I obtain and use it 100% LEGALLY.

Now Im not here to change your mind on this topic, but like I said I used to be anti-marijuana, and still am for recreational use, but for medicinal purposes it has helped me to overcome a disorder I suffered from.

I live in Wa. State and when I was working I worked with a woman who had had cancer and she was dead set against using pot way before it became soooo illegal before it was so abused as it is today. She went to Governor Ray and got it legalized for cancer patients. Then the feds picked-up on it and came up with synthetic pot and got the law changed. Someone had left a package (wrapped in brown paper) at her front door and rang the bell. She brought it in instead of throwing it away and then she heard you could cook with it so she made some brownies and threw a couple of small handfuls in. They were having dinner at the neighbors and she left before her husband who had been cutting the lawn. He was to meet her there but didn't show up and she was mad at him. She figured he had too many beers and passed out. Well he did pass out alright but not from beer but from a brownie. OOPS! She did not tell him what was in the brownies for about 6 mos. She would take a small bite before having kemp and would not get sick.
My son-in-law smokes it when he can not stand his pain. He never did it around the children and kept it locked up. He says he does not want to become depended or addicted to prescription drugs and their nasty after effects. He is disabled.
We have to remember God created this world and planted all the plants including pot to be used for medicinal purposes not for recreational use. So no I do not think it is a sin if you do not abuse it. Abusing it is what makes it a sin.

I'm OK with medical marijuana use, within the law. There's still some federal/state conflict over it. And since smoking anything is going to be terrible for your lungs, I would say getting the medical benefits in the form of a pill or some other controlled dosage would be the better way to go if it is truly the medical benefits you are after.

And industrial hemp should be legal.

Back in the 1960s when I first read of medical marijuana, it was brought to my attention that this was the medicine used in the Bible during Old Testament times - recall the Bible's reference to herbs of the field as medicine. I did not believe those reports.

Years later I have done some historical research and found it to be true!

Egyptians doctors used cannabis as medicine to calm nerves and for other ailments as did other pagan cultures. In fact they worshiped goddesses of medicine for providing this means of attaining health:

cannabis Goddess Plan Pr Ntr Kmt

At that time the children of Israel lived in Egypt. It stands to reason that they would adopt Egyptian health practices - they certainly did when it came to mummification of the dead. Therefore, it turns out that those reports I read in the 1960s about cannabis as the source of medicine in the Bible were correct!

I use it to keep me away from the perscriptions that I have been prescribed for conditions related to PTSD. The pills were taking a toll on me and my relationships. No problems with sativa.

Yeah, I tend to trust more in the benefits of natural cures than the rubbish the medical industry churns out.

And thanks for your service.

I am closing this thread because it there are several posts which touch on promoting illegal usage of marijuana. Discussing medical usage of marijuana is allowed, especially surrounding medical research, but promoting illegal usage of it is not. [/c]
