  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How do they know with certainty these suicides and divorces came from giving a name to the ai ?
Giving AI a name makes it more like a person and it subconciously changes how people interact with it, especially teenagers and younger adults, who are already much more comfortable with screen chats than talking to live people.

I don't normally like to link to Wikipedia, but this one has valid links to multiple articles.

Here's an article explaining the rise of divorces involving AI Chatbots:

Of course, if someone lets a chatbot cause a divroce, they likely already had marital problems and should have talked to a counselor or pastor.

Alas, Our individualistic society may not be of any assistance for vulnerable people

May be these people not only call the ai "he", instead of "it, but unconsciously "He".
It's a very concerning issue

Another problem might be if people start using a "he" rather than a "it" as subject
Lol, I do already. Not really but I have at times said goodbye to the automatic checkout machines. Told them to stop repeating themselves and not to be so pushy as I am getting on lol. But they never listen. They are so rude. No wait not as rude as some of the real checkout operators lol.

But I could imagine if they became humanoid and mimicked human gestures and facial expressions and all that. Its a bit spooky actually.

I think there may be a connection to gaming as well. I know my son was into it for a while and became fixated and irritable when playing. I reckon road rage may also be related. When humans get entangled with machines it seems to change them.

Maybe its the expectation or pressure of keeping up or being constantly controlled. Or the tech itself being too much that it builds up and theres an overload. Or just trying to do several things at once.

Maybe humans are not built for living in a techno world. Its certainly a long way from nature. Makes you want to find a patch of earth and go back to nature.

i used to be irritable as well when, as teenager, i was reading a book and someone requested me for service. I no longer read book, and try to make myself attentive if someone asks me for something, but it requires effort.
I mean i don't put all the blame on techno.

Student data is not allowed to be used to improve or market products.
I would hope that data of students could be used to improve a football or bicycle helmet, for examples. May be I do not understand you right. Also, it could be helpful to get stats about which design of a safety device would be more acceptable and therefore more likely to be used > that would make it more marketable, indeed, perhaps for a desirable reason.

And as I might have offered > they could have the AI stuff in a closed system so it could not be glitched out to others by means of hacking . . . since the system would be closed and monitored. And students could choose to be part of it, with parental consent.

It looks as though ones in this case are acting like they want to protect student privacy, while in other situations ones can feel even entitled to affect students without parents knowing what is going on. And they are not really honoring student privacy if they can push their ways into the attention of the students.

I don't know about physical products, but from the electronic data aspect, on the federal level, FERPA is a law that restricts what companies can do with student data. In my case, NYS Education Law 2D is even more restrictive and several other states have also added their own similar student privacy laws. Another aspect of NYS law (and I think CA and Mass are similar) is that schools must publish a list of software companies that they have contracts with, so that parents can be fully informed.

The idea of protecting student privacy is valiant, but it also creates an obstacle for schools. The side effect of these laws is to make schools much less nimble in being able to adopt new technology. The challenge in our technology driven world is how to teach kids how to effectively and safely use new technology while keeping them safe - their personal data as well as keeping them safe from online predators.

As far as AI using closed systems, it's not feasible at scale. They would have to stand up dedicated instances for each school district instead of having a dedicated server farm environment for all schools. It is also part of the education law in several states that companies cannot use student data to improve their technology (although federal law does allow for internal improvements only).
