I thought "SDA" was an abbreviation because acronyms tend to be words formed from the initial letters. So I checked the online dictionary I use and it says this:

hmm...i thought acronyms doesn't have to be a "dictionary" word.

A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

Techincally speaking they don't have to be "dictionary" words. Radar for instance wasn't a word until the acronym came into existence; now its an accepted word. I think the difference is that people can pronounce radar for it is structured much like an ordinary word (the placing of vowels within the frame of the consonants) but "SDA" wouldn't roll of the tongue as well - at least not without someone offering a napkin to the one speaking it.
