  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Update: all tests were normal. He is being seen by a neurologist and psychiatrist. They think it is sleep deprivation and after he is evaluated more, depending on the results, they will induce sleep.

I really hope this is what is going b/c that would be the simplest to deal with.

Well he should now be in an induced sleep. They think this is a sleep deprivation induced psychosis and that the sleep deprivation may have been caused by either some of the meds they used in surgery or from one of his prescriptions. They haven't completely ruled out a psychiatric issue, and won't be able to until he is stabilized, but it sounds like they don't really suspect that. He is going to be hospitalized for several days.

Also, the neurologist said that the reason his pupils were dialated and his HR was up so high is because his body is just pumping out adrenaline right now, which is part of him being sleep deprived, too.

I'm slightly aggitated because evidently no one explained to my parents that the drug they gave my brother to induce sleep was an antipsychotic (Haldol). I think it is an absolutely appropriate drug to give him, but they ought to have made it clear what it was -- my parents just thought he was on some kind of sleeping medicine.

My brother is in the main hospital now but is going to be transferred to a psychiatric unit later today. My parents do not know if he will be in a room by himself and that bothers me, too. One would think that he would need to be, at least at first, given that he is needing to sleep as much as possible.

The doctors seem to think that it will be several days before my brother starts coming out of this.

I am continuing to hope the doctors' hypotheses are right this is all just caused by the sleep deprivation and/or surgery drugs/prescriptions. If it is, then my brother will recover and go back to his normal life. If it isn't, it will be very sad.

Hearing what all you've been through with prescription drugs, I wouldn't blame ya if you never took any! :)

I'm sure sleep will make him feel like a completely different person! There have been days I didn't even recognize myself when I was so sleep deprived. Thanks for the updates, Melissa!

I wonder why they can't put him in the main hospital.. but maybe I should stay out of it  Sorry! I get pretty passionate about health.

This is more complicated than that. He is in an acute psychosis, so even if he gets sleep he will probably still be psychotic for a few days. The question that remains to be answered is whether or not the psychosis is the beginning of psychiatric issues or just something that was caused by all the sleep deprivation and/or a drug reaction.

They can't keep him there because he is in an acute psychosis.

BTW, I have given thank you reps but I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has prayed about this so far. My dad said he very well could have died yesterday, either from a heart attack or from getting into an accident or something. I'm so glad that my parents went back home and got him to the hospital, and that nothing bad happened to him during the hours when they were trying to get there.

I read this earlier, but didn't know what to say. I am praying for your family, but wow. This story is unlike anything I've ever heard before. I can't imagine how scared your family has been and what your brother is going through. :(

Well, if it makes you feel any better, my brother is probably not scared at all. :p He's been giggly and out of his mind. Hopefully, he will not get scared when he goes to the psych unit. He is probably just going to be sleeping and too drugged to be scared there.

The question that remains to be answered is whether or not the psychosis is the beginning of psychiatric issues or just something that was caused by all the sleep deprivation and/or a drug reaction.

First - I am sorry to hear your brother is going through this. I hope the answer is found and he recovers.

Second - I don't believe psychiatric issues pop up out of nowhere for a person who is *not* under medication. It could be that the does have these issues - but people don't go from normal/clear minded to babbling about being a leader of a new religion in the blink of an eye. I'd suspect the drugs first and foremost.

Third - If it is not the drugs, or not wholly the drugs, be careful of a label on his condition that excludes all answers but medication.

The reason I say this is because I have an uncle who is diagnosed "bi-polar" (he went nuts and played chicken in his car with opposing traffic) - and in a later counceling session alot of his past regarding his abusive father came out. This was never dealt with and he basically remains a medicated vegetable incapable of doing much beyond watch t.v.

Just be careful what you are told and conclude. From what you described about his circumstances (esp the death of a loved one) I would suspect his condition is wholly treatable with the right counceling.

Wow, I'm SO glad you got him to the hospital lastnight...truly sounds like it was in the nick of time.

Please keep us posted! I truly pray that they are doing the right thing for him...I know what it's like to be hospitalized and then "convinced" of what's wrong with you...it's very scary.

I just looked up one of the medications Matt was taking (for nausea) and it says insomnia and psychosis are side effects.

"Psychosis" is highlighted in turquoise under psychiatric side effects...

Reglan Side Effects | Drugs.com

Just thought I would pass that along.

It makes me really mad that there are so many drugs out there with side effects that are tons worse than the condition you're actually taking them for.

This is exactly why I read all the information that comes with any prescription drug I'm given. I learned the hard way and now Matt has, too.
